Hi,
Starting from the begining, I lost a apisto cacatuiode cichlid about 2/3 weeks ago from a suspected baterial infection (slightly bloated eye, unable to swim, sinking to the bottom of the tank), I treated the tank with a tetra general tonic about 4 days after introducing the tonic I lost a platy (no external symtoms). The lost cichlid was replaced as the lfs has similar problems (I only had the fish 2 days before it died) and the new fish was introduced whilst the meds were still in the tank, I hasten the add that the replacement fish was a different type (agassizii not cacatuiode) and is still in my tank. Following this episode I have introduced nothing to the tank and then this weekend I lost a further 3 apisto's (same symptoms as above) so now I'm suspecting a possible problem with the actually fish i.e. not very good quality/nothing I could have done as again the symptoms are sinking to the bottom of the tank and when swimming having no control(last fish died Monday). All other fish (excl platy, see below) in the tank appear well and have not changed in eating behaviour etc etc.
I have one male platy which has seemed a bit depressed tbh never really moved and the last couple of days say 3/4 days I've noticed he's looking a bit fat which I stupidly thought was because he doesn't really move a lot.... and today he's dead.
So I've looked up 'bloated platy' and read about 'dropsy' - although this is the only fish with a swollen belly could that be my problem brought on my the bacterial infection? If so, can I stop the rest of my fish being effected? If so, how!?
Tank stats
temp 27
PH 7.5
KH 3
GH 16
No2 & No3 nil
Ammonia - yellow
Water changes - 50% Saturday, 25% Monday evening and I plan to do another tonight if I get time or tomorrow morning anyway. When I do a water change I always use Seachem Prime and use enough to treat the whole tank
Sorry for the long post but I need to nip this problem in the butt - none of the fish have been of a rip old age as I only started the tank in January and it's been fully cycled, active carbon must be working due to the stats I'm getting that said I am due to replace this in the next couple of weeks.
Can anyone offer me any help??
