have any of you ever wondered what your first post was and if now after your time here on TFF could you answer it :p i cant remember mine but it will of been something stupid

This is a pretty newbie-ish question to ask, but I need to know the answer.

You know the "1 inch of fish per gallon" rule, well, do snails and other non-fish creatures count towards that? Like for example, if you were stocking a 20 gallon tank, and you already had 20 inches worth of fish, could you add a snail? :dunno:

That was mine.... well my first one that was asking a question. To see yours, go to your profile then under your username click 'Find all posts by this member'. Then down the bottom go to 'Last' and it should be somewhere there. :)

I am starting out with a small sized tank about 60cm by 40cm.I would like to know some easy going fish to start with that are relitevly easy to keep. But the more colourful the better and what id the best to feed them on as i quite like the BETTA but i dont know if its the best for a newbie like me and what it would go with. Thanks

THIS WAS IT

Puffers in a tank with Bettas? Only if you can find really tiny Hanibal Lecter style masks for the puffers. :p

Hi!
I want to start a tropical fish tank. The tank I want (well, can afford at the moment anyway) is 11l, which is about 4.5 gallons. I was wondering which fish, if any, would go with a betta and also, how much do bettas and heaters (25 watt) usually cost?
Thankee very much!

LOL.

My first post was kinda boring;

"Hi there, um, well i'm new here so i thought i might indroduce myself here. Some of you might know me from TFC, so hi to all who already know me and hello to those who don't"

mine:

Hey, first post and needing some help if i may!!!

I bought my tank, set it up and left it empty for 48 hours with the filter and heater running. Then I bought some fish and added them:

2 Flame Red Dwarf Gouramis (both male, I'm pretty sure)
3 Balloon Mollies
1 Red Tailed Shark
1 Fiddler Crab.

I know now that I should have let the tanke cycle for 4 weeks with just a few fish in such as Danios, and that I should use real plants.

If only I knew before. Anyway, I'm keeping a close eye on the ammonia and nitrite levels.

My problem is that for a day or two the fish seemed to be fine, but then two of the mollies started acting aggresively toward another, and before I knew it he was dead. Now the mollies are fine.

About the same time, one of the Gourami's started really being aggressive toward the other. I've noticed some fin damage, and he had started to swim strangely, and as soon as he comes out from behind the water heater the other one chases him back behind.

I called PetSmart where I got it from, talked to some guy and he said a few interesting things:

1) I asked if i should add a female to distract the naughty male for a while and he said 'i don't think you can tell the difference between male and female'. Which I don't believe, but anyway then he said that I should have let it cycle and that I shouldn't add any more fish. Fair enough.

2) That I should add some ornaments to "break up the chase a little". So I've done that, about to boil and add them to the tank.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Could be worse I guess! lol

This is my first post under this name. I had joined a few years earlier, and didn't stay long. I can't remember what my user name was then though

One of my platies had fry. I only found one in the tank and am assuming the rest were gobbled up. I caught the one and put it in a little 'nursing' take that hooks on to the side of the tank.

My first question is how long should I keep him/her in there? How big should it be before released into the rest of the tank?

Number two ... the parent fish is still very large and looks pregnant still. Could she have more fry on the way? And how can I tell for sure?

Thanks for any help/advise you can offer me.

Hi. I got a pictus about a week ago and while it has ich at the moment, (which I'm taking care of) I was wondering what kind of fish I could get for the tank later. The tank is a 30 gallon with a power filter and has the pictus, about five feeder guppies and four fancy guppies with some guppy fry in a side breeder net. I was thinking about maybe getting some leopard cories because I read they get about 2 1/2 inches long, which I think will be big enough for the pictus not to eat when full grown (it's only about three inches now) I also saw a weather loach but wasn't sure about what they're like or how big they get. I also saw some kind of fish that reminds me of a flounder only it was small and was hanging on the side of the tank at the fish store. I was also wondering if getting cories would make the tank too crowded and who would grow faster, the pictus or the cories? So far the pictus hasn't even bothered the feeder guppies, it's pretty happy just chasing flakes. Any help would be appreciated.

Not too shabby, I have to say... even though I now no longer am keeping the pictus lol.
And those cories, well, he did try to eat them... :X

I don't wanna post my first post
It's embarrasing HOW STUPID I WAS.
but since you guys dragged out yours I suppose I'll show as well
Btw yes I could answer most of the things wrong with my initial post now thanks to all of you wonderfull people.

Keep in mind I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT FISH when I posted this.

If you guys want I can go through and answer all of the things wrong with my initial setup just to prove I know better now but man that would take atleast a couple hours. Hard to believe so many mistakes can be compressed into such a short post.

I got a 29 gallon tank for my girl recently. It is a semi-aggressive tank so my theory was that the smaller fish would be eaten by the larger ones when they got to big for all of them to co-exist. But I am pretty sure I got conned by the guy at the fish store. I initially bought 3 rainbow sharks, 3 gourami, 1 cuhli loach, 1 pictus catfish, 1 common pleco. Then I went back because all of the fish were hiding. The tank looked empty. So I bought another Rainbow shark, five gold danios, and five zebra danios. Then I got two dwarf puffers. All of the fish are doing fine. Initially the new rainbow shark got pushed around a little but now things have settled down. Actually when I put in the new fish the whole tank came to life. Now even the cuhli loach comes out from time to time. All of my test's have come out ok except for PH. She put some stuff in there and now PH is perfect. The only problem is that the danios get 2 and a half inches long. I think this is too big for the rainbow sharks to eat when they reach full size. So, aside from the many errors that I am sure I made and I am sure you will point out to me, what should I do with the danio's. They are very friendly and my girl doesn't want to take them back. Be kind this is my first big tank. One more thing. I was wondering if an Albino Rainbow shark would school with mine If the one's I have start fighting again and i need to take back one of the males. Thank you.

P.S. If any of you buy frogs make sure there are no holes in the top of your lid. I made that mistake and my two african dwarf frogs climbed out and are gone. Either that or they are INCREDIBLY good at hiding.

My first 6 posts were photos of my tank. It was in chat that I got the most laughs!!! CFC told me after I had been there for 5 minutes on my first chat time that all my fish would die :( Not surprising since I started with 6 glolights, 6 neons and 6 platies two days after adding water!!!

This was one of my posts not that long after I joined :

I have had reasonable success with platies....that said, I have had one die of finrot, on ie of dropsy and another from suspected organ failure....ALL MY FAULT>> I over fed the poor things! crazy.gif

I do however have 4 platy fry netted and many more in the tank (my yellow platy gave birth today, I think...she was fat and is now thin!!!).. They eat everything I give em and most of them survived the cycling where my nitrite hit 20ppm!!! (one died bye2.gif

All is OK with my current lot of platies....my pH is around 7.6...I was also told never to adjust pH.

With your sick platies....it would be handy if you had a quarantine tank....it could be the start of ich or finrot...I would recommend turning your heater up to 30degC (sorry, not sure what that is in F) and possible getting some ich medications as a preventative measure.

Goodluck with it and let us know how it all goes

Cheers

Angela

PS....It may look like I am a newbie but I actually had 130 posts before the whole site debacle thing.....but YAY...it is back and thats all that matters!!! I love this site!!

HA HA HA. "I actually had 130 posts" LMAO!!!!
