This is a pretty newbie-ish question to ask,but I need to know the answer.
You know the "1 inch of fish per gallon" rule, well, do snails and other non-fish creatures count towards that? Like for example, if you were stocking a 20 gallon tank, and you already had 20 inches worth of fish, could you add a snail?![]()
I am starting out with a small sized tank about 60cm by 40cm.I would like to know some easy going fish to start with that are relitevly easy to keep. But the more colourful the better and what id the best to feed them on as i quite like the BETTA but i dont know if its the best for a newbie like me and what it would go with. Thanks

Hi
which do u people think is better......a net breeder or a plastic contraption?
Because i have had plenty of births in a contraption and i havent bought a net. so which do you think is bteer?
Hey, first post and needing some help if i may!!!
I bought my tank, set it up and left it empty for 48 hours with the filter and heater running. Then I bought some fish and added them:
2 Flame Red Dwarf Gouramis (both male, I'm pretty sure)
3 Balloon Mollies
1 Red Tailed Shark
1 Fiddler Crab.
I know now that I should have let the tanke cycle for 4 weeks with just a few fish in such as Danios, and that I should use real plants.
If only I knew before. Anyway, I'm keeping a close eye on the ammonia and nitrite levels.
My problem is that for a day or two the fish seemed to be fine, but then two of the mollies started acting aggresively toward another, and before I knew it he was dead. Now the mollies are fine.
About the same time, one of the Gourami's started really being aggressive toward the other. I've noticed some fin damage, and he had started to swim strangely, and as soon as he comes out from behind the water heater the other one chases him back behind.
I called PetSmart where I got it from, talked to some guy and he said a few interesting things:
1) I asked if i should add a female to distract the naughty male for a while and he said 'i don't think you can tell the difference between male and female'. Which I don't believe, but anyway then he said that I should have let it cycle and that I shouldn't add any more fish. Fair enough.
2) That I should add some ornaments to "break up the chase a little". So I've done that, about to boil and add them to the tank.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
One of my platies had fry. I only found one in the tank and am assuming the rest were gobbled up. I caught the one and put it in a little 'nursing' take that hooks on to the side of the tank.
My first question is how long should I keep him/her in there? How big should it be before released into the rest of the tank?
Number two ... the parent fish is still very large and looks pregnant still. Could she have more fry on the way? And how can I tell for sure?
Thanks for any help/advise you can offer me.
Please if tou live in the Northwich area of cheshire and want a 8" catfish for free please contact me asap or if you know of anybody that wants one. We have a fish tank with lots of little fish in and this guy is just gettibng too big. please help
I have had reasonable success with platies....that said, I have had one die of finrot, on ie of dropsy and another from suspected organ failure....ALL MY FAULT>> I over fed the poor things! crazy.gif
I do however have 4 platy fry netted and many more in the tank (my yellow platy gave birth today, I think...she was fat and is now thin!!!).. They eat everything I give em and most of them survived the cycling where my nitrite hit 20ppm!!! (one died bye2.gif
All is OK with my current lot of platies....my pH is around 7.6...I was also told never to adjust pH.
With your sick platies....it would be handy if you had a quarantine tank....it could be the start of ich or finrot...I would recommend turning your heater up to 30degC (sorry, not sure what that is in F) and possible getting some ich medications as a preventative measure.
Goodluck with it and let us know how it all goes
Cheers
Angela
PS....It may look like I am a newbie but I actually had 130 posts before the whole site debacle thing.....but YAY...it is back and thats all that matters!!! I love this site!!
