For feeding puffer fish, what would be wrong with just dropping a teaspoon or whatever of brine shrimp eggs right into the tank? You could just skim off the egg shells and the fish could eat as they please. Has anyone ever tried this?

Brine shrimp take about 18-24hours for the eggs to hatch depending on the temperature and salinity of the water. If anything I would think the puffer fish would end up eating just eggs which wouldn't be very beneficial.

It'd be better to hatch them outside the tank. They'll need pretty salty water to hatch, which most fish aren't going to like. I'm not sure what puffer you have, but chances are it won't do well in the required salt levels.

A brine shrimp hatchery is really nothing more than water in a jar or 2 liter bottle with a small airstone.
