I bought a bag of aquarium gravel from Wilko on impulse last week. Ive looked at it today and it looks very different to the pea gravel I have in my other tanks. Is white with rainbow bits in and the white actually looks a little like quartz. Its slightly sharp edged too. I put vinegar on it and nothing happened. No fizz.

Has anyone used it successfully? I want to know if its safe. Will post a piccy of it soon.

To be honest, ifs its aquarium gravel then i would assume it has been tested and passed the required standards to be put on sale. I would say it was safe to use.

I know what you mean, but Wilko are a bargain type shop and I wouldnt want to think it was unsafe. Then again, they sell loads of pet stuff, so I suppose youre right.

If it has sharp edges, it might not be safe for some fish, like bettas who could tear their fins or loaches and cories who like to dig around in the gravel. I think it just depends what kind of fish they are, but I'm sure it's safe as a whole.

I would be wary of any shop that isn't a specialist pet store etc.

Wilko sell the fluffy bedding type stuff you use with hamsters and rats and gets caught in their intestines until they just die  Plus loads of other stuff I dont agree with but thats a whole other story.

However if you've done the fizz test then I'd say it would be alright but do bear in mind the sharp edges if you have any bottom dwellers or sensitive fish that like to dig.
