One harlequin rasbora out of five has white fluffy looking area on the tip of his face, at his lower jaw. It sticks out a few mm from his body.

Other harlequins and the three platies are fine.

30% - 40% water change every 4 days. New water treated with decholorinator.

20 U.S. gallon

This rasbora was in the quarentine tank for a bit under a week because he was new. We added him to the big 20 gallon maybe 3 days ago.

Here is the best picture we have of him.

Any ideas?

Mouth fungus columnaris.
Can you isolate the fish for treatment.
Maracyn

I have a packet of Mardel's Maracyn just in case. I've isolated the fishy in our ten gallon quarentine. Will start the treatment.

I just want to double check on the pamphlet's instructions. It says as long as the carbon is more than 6 days old, I won't have to take it out. This is true?

I would remove it never heard of that, carbon for removing meds.

Maracyn
Manufacturer: Mardel
A broad-spectrum antibiotic for gram-positive bacterial infections. For infections of columnaris (body fungus), fin and tail rot, popeye, gill disease, and secondary infections.
Active ingredient: Erythromycin.

So if I remove it, should I still keep it in the water where there isn't much water flow? To keep the bacteria alive and such. Or just take it out completely?

Fetched some sites up on maracyn and it tells you to remove the carbon.
Do a search on it.
Good luck.
Take it out completely the black carbon.
Leave the rest of the sponges in the tank.

Thank you for the info, Wilder. Very helpful link there. Would you suggest I also feed the fishy some tetracycline I have in the fridge?

I will consider salting our water as well.

No try the treatment first, tetracycline works well on bigger fish you should'nt need it for a tiny harlequin.

Thank you, Anita.

One of the other rasboras in our main tank now has a whitish patch on her head between her eyes. Moved her into the quarentine tank along with the fat lip one. Now treating both tanks.

Never rain but pours, yes it columnaris always shows up on the head, good luck.
