Hi,

I'm going to buy some fish today. I've fully cycled my tank and want some hardy fish. My tank is 28 litres and fairly tall.

I've been trying to find a tropical hardy fish index on the net but I cannot find one anywhere.

Can anyone help?

I cant think how big 28L actually is but dannios, white cloud mountain minnows, silvertip tetras, glowlight tetras and tiger barbs all spring to mind as smaller, hardy fish.

Hi, zebra danios are very hardy and great to watch and also platy's are hardy. I have had platys in my tank whilst cycling and they have been great fun to watch, showed no signs of stress(i have been doing daily water changes to lessen the impact of spikes!!!!). Platys are lovely natured too, they come up to the glass at feeding time like little puppy dowwgs!Ahhhhh! You could try www.thinkfish.co.uk, they have loads of databases with all types of fish on them! HTH.GRJ :good:

Harlequin Rasboras - my LFS recommended them or Zebra Danios as 'hardy' fish, but I'd read elsewhere that the Zebras like plenty of simming space so I
got 3 Harlequins as my first fish (in a 54L tank). Be ultra careful that you don't overfeed, cos only 2 or 3 will need very, very little food.

Danio's ..the Zebra or Leopard variety...I got 3 of each in my 70 L tank as 1st fish.

There hard as nails....So u want got wrong with em...also they're live wire's and just bomb around the tank all day long.

What are the dimensions of your tank?
You're a little restricted as 7.5G isn't that big and a lot of the fish mentioned need at least 10G as they prefer to be kept in groups and need plenty of swimming space.
Most Tetras, barbs, Danios etc. all like plenty of swimming space as they are active fish.
You could perhaps keep 3-4 Guppies in there although you are best having all males so there is no reproduction!
A Betta would be great in that size tank with a few Pygmy Corydoras.
You could go for a pair of shelldwellers such as Neolamprologus Multifasciatus/Brevis.
I keep a pair of Apistogramma Cacatuoides (Dwarf Cockatoo Cichlids) in mine and they are doing fine.
Is there any fish in particular that you really like? Maybe if you google a few fish and then ask on the board to get a better idea of suitability. :good:

Guppies, mollies, platies, betta.Guppies, mollies, platies, betta, neaons, tetras.

no danios, i had them in my 20 gallon and they move so fast and swim so much that i didnt even feel that my 20 gallon was adequate enough for them.

guppies.... but keep in mind many of them are weakened due to inbreeding...... but i guesss they are relativly cheap.....

Well i wouldnt reccomend guppies to anyboy after loosing about 9 that i have bought.
However i would reccomend platys to anybody, number 1 hardy fish in my opinion and pretty too.
I added my girl when i added my first batch of guppies and whilst all of the guppies died, she is still here.

I got 5 Guppies of which 3 are females and 2 are males!

I mentioned to the fish retailer that I'm getting a much larger tank for my living room in a couple of months. He mentioned straight away Guppies as 'hardy' fish, he said they might mate and when they do I can put the older Guppies in the bigger tank and leave the small fry in the smaller tank.

Just wondered, is there such thing as a single fish bullying other fish because one of my Guppies seems to be ruling the tank at the mo. She is slightly bigger and has really black eyes - she's not pregnant is she? :hyper:

I'm afraid Guppies are one of the least hardy fish as they are interbred so much.
They are also best kept as one male to at least 3 females as they may pester each other a fair bit. I'm afraid your lfs has given you bad advice. Guppies will breed about every 4 weeks and you may end up being overrun with fry.
If you can, take them back to the shop and find something a little more suitable. ;)

I agree with stang1, ooooooo bad choice in my opinion mate, i will give them 3 days max.
As i said earlier, they are so weak fish, probs the most least hardy fish. -_-
