Last night I bought a package of these from Wal-Mart. (Yeah, I know, but I *had* to check out the fish dept. and know not to buy fish from there...) I just happened to see these and noticed the price was half as much as PetsMart wanted for them. (Again, no real surprise there, I know.)

I've had these twice before over the years and both times, they were either eaten, rotted or something because I never got any plants out of them. I'm thinking I'll put them in a little container of aquarium water and see what happens, then if they do grow, I'll transfer them to my aquariums.

So...I guess my question is...has anyone else ever successfully grown these things?

Thanks.

Not from bulbs, but i grow Aponogetons in my tank. Not sure if thats what you meant?

yeah I bought those and grew some with it. They come with 3 or 4 bulbs but only one sprouted.... I think thye plan it that way. I also bough tthe dwarf lily bulbs and only one of them sprouted but it is really a preety plant. Not sure what tank conditions you need them to grow. Good luck =)

I got five bulbs. If only one ends up growing, I'll be happy, it'll still cost about the same as if I'd bought a live plant from the pet store.
Thanks! You gave me hope! ;)

I got a 5-bulb package once, 3 of them sprouted - I ended up with an onion plant, an aponogeton crispus, and a waterlily. I had to wait about a month before they actually sprouted, but they grew very fast when they did.

The two that didn't sprout I ended up mailing to the company that distributed them, since they had a guarantee. They gave me like 30 bulbs in return.

Were they all suppose to be the same type of plant? The 5 I have are all different shapes and sizes, so I wonder.

I did save the package and my receipt because of that guarantee. I guess I'll see what happens!

Thanks!

I got one of the "assorted bulbs" packages.

Are yours very different from one another? If I remember correctly, aponogeton bulbs look like furry brown peanuts.

Normally I hate wall-mart with a vengeance but I got a gift card for my birthday so I bought a glowing plant, a fake log, a package of aponagetons and one of lily-hybrids. I ended up with 3 different types of plants, all of witch are growing nicely except for 2 that didn't sprout and 2 that I gave to my sister and haven't been planted yet. At first the aponagetons weren't doing very well but now they're huge, and the lily is flowering like crazy! which is great since it's a beautiful plant and I'd really like more of them.

All the bulbs look the same except some of them are peanut shaped and others are spherical-ish, however I haven't seen any correlation between the shape and the type of plant it is.

Yeah, they're all suppose to be the same and yet there's short fat furry brown peanuts and long skinny furry brown peanuts! ;)I put them in a small container of aquarium water day before yesterday since the last ones I had either got eaten or rotted away to nothing before they had a chance to sprout. Yesterday I noticed the water was milky and stunk to high heaven, in only one day! Made me glad I didn't put them in any of my tanks! I changed the water then and then again today and while it still doesn't smell pleasant, at least it's not getting milky again.

Well that gives me hope too, I hope at least a couple of these make it!!

mine grew a little too much, crowded my tank. My fish store gave me a secret (well, that was new lol) get ones that already have green sprouts on them and there is a higher chance of them surviving, and only plant half of the bulb in the substrate. Needless to say it worked....

When you say plant half of it, (this may be dense) but which end of the bulb do you plant? Some of the bulbs seem to be opened-ended? and some of them seem to be the same on both ends(to a degree).

I recently did a search on the aponogeton bulbs (as I am attempting to grow these things AGAIN) and some of the results recommend letting the plant grow some sort of roots and then plant it. ALso, planting the whole bulb causes it to rot since it hardly receives light. Any truth in any of this?

I've purchased quite a few of these plant bulbs from Wally-world and haven't had much success. I've managed to have two of the aponogeton bulbs start to grow, but my severum eats them as soon as they're long enough.

One last thing....

Once the bulb is planted, how long should I expect to wait before I see any growth from these?

I'm glad someone else posted on this subject... Almost forgot that I was gonna do it the other day.

Thanks,

BobRoss

mine grew 4 stems of 20" leaves in 2 weeks. Newly set up tank BTW. Get one that already has green thingys growing out of it and plant the opposite side of the green thingys.
