Anyone got any idea where I could get some good slate from for my upcoming aquascape? I tried the local garden centers and the selection was, well, poor.

Anyone?

Stone merchant ? Building supplier, often sell slate for gardens.

Other than that, i can`t believe i was going to give you a wacky suggestion of Wales, looked at your profile and you live there...so certainly possible.
BAsically, i went not so long since to Snowdon and pitched camp near the little town where the railway starts. The place was full of slate, loads of the stuff everywhere! People say its a no-no to pick stuff from the wild, but its only gonna be blown out of the ground and sold to you anyway!!

lol, Good luck

its called Llanberiss, i think thats how its spelt.

I was going to say the same thing, go north waterloo kid :good:

Ahhhh snowdonia many a wild day spent round those mountains :D

THats the one, stayed at a camp site with my mate just above the youth hostel. Great place....walked up the mountain and we got to the top there was 6 foot of snow!!
Next day, it was on the news that someone had died, fallen down a cliff edge.

Great place, loved it so much i took by fiancee up there the weekend after. :)

Should have seent hat one coming!

Firstly I'll agreee with you on two points. Number one. Snowdonia is a fantastic place to be. Secondly Snowdonia is basically built out of slate so there's plenty there.
Unfortunately north Wales is a long drive from my house on the south coast and with a couple of five and a half month olds I don't have the opportunity to travel far. I got as far Brecon on the weekend and that was far enough for those two.
If I got the chance I'd be up there in the blink of an eye. I stayed in the youth hostel as a kid on a school trip. One of the best weeks of my life!

The hunt for slate goes on!

I'm based in Cardiff too WK, but originally from North Wales.

I've been thinking of getting some slate for my new tank (i've got old and new roofling slate already, but want some chunkier pieces).

I think that I'll be going up to visit family over bank hol weekend, and had thought I might try a visit to llanberis or bleanau ffestiniog area to look for some slate.

Now I cant make any promises, cos its not def. that we're going (2 kids & the mrs and all the gear), but if I went I probably could fit in an extra piece or two!.

If you have something particular in mind try to describe it and I'll see what can be done.

find an old ruined cottage/house of some sort.

That's what i use for my riccia/ moss. It looks great!

Somewhere, there's a little old lady coming home to her cute little house every day, wondering why at 80 years old she's having a growth spurt!

:D

Thanks for the offer Scubadoo but there's no way on earth I'm going to be able to properly describe the pieces I want. I'm probably best just trying the garden centres etc for the next few weeks and see where that takes me. Having kids myself I know the hassle of going away and adding a hunt for specific pieces of slate can't help.

Again, thanks for the offer.

Hehe, i can just about see the place you guys are on about. Its around a 10 min drive from here.
We have mounds of waste slate here , Ive never really looked at it for my tanks . suppose you always look for stuff you cant get lol.

RYO - I can see the germ of a new e-bay shop for slate instead of mopani !

Mind you postage costs could be a bit prohibitive.

No probs WK - I understand if you're after something special, and TBH someone else will never see the same qualities that you do in any piece.
