I need some plants that will take care of the abundance of minerals I have. I want to keep south american fish rams, platies and gouramis and so forth but I need some mineral busters since my ph is around 8.4 and my water is really hard.

In my experience I have kept various Valisneria in pH 8.2, hard water. I believe Amazon Swords will tolerate hard water as well.

I don't know if this usefull, but I also had a ph of over 8, I added co2 now it just under 7. Now I have hard.. slighltly acidic water. My Amazons aren't doing that great, but java moss, hygrophilla( good grief that spelling isn't even close  ) and cabomba (new addition I don't know what kind, but could find out) seem to do quite well. Light is about 3 watts per gallon.

I thought if it was hard, it would be more basic? I have java moss in my tank I'm currently cycling. SO far so good in that aspect. I have a little over 3 wpg. 3.6 by my estimate.

Generally yes, but as I understand it CO2 lowers the ph, but doesn't effect the gh. Can't explain it but I do remember reading the reason about it on this forum. Good luck, the best thing I ever did was add co2. Went from plant killer to plant clipper. Still far from expert though, but it is fun

If your interested
http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/art_plant_co2chart.htm all I know is my water still has a pretty high gh, but the plants grow really well. When the excitment wears off, maybe I will get more interested into the why

I have really hard water and it's never affected my plants growing.
Btw, Platies prefer hard, alkaline water. You are right about the Rams though, they don't last long without soft water.
Crypts are good plants to have in hard water, they like it.
