I live in the Midwestern United States. I've always been curious as to the availability of certain fish here versus other nations. What fish are hard to get where you live?

I have been having a hell of a time trying to find a female beta for my male named Jinx. He's lonely and needs a little tail.....no pun intended.

I rescued him from the shelf of a Wal-Mart. He now dwells in a 29-gallon tank with a few neons and some small tetras.

Yes, I could have one shipped...but honestly, what are the odds of the fish arriving alive or at all?

As I've shipped well over 2,000 bettas in the past couple of years, I can say that the odds of them arriving alive are 100% in my experience. But with that said, loneliness not a reason to breed your bettas, it's a lot of work mind you (check out the betta forum for more info)

Here in Texas we have a lot of fish people and shops. It's not difficult at all to find rare fish.

Male bettas do best on their own, males and females are not very sociable with each other and can often end up killing each other unfortunatly- he may look lonely, but he'll be alot more happier on his own than with other bettas  .

Male and female bettas aren't compatible unless they are breeding but they have to be conditioned and you have to research and be ready to handle and care for a couple hundred fry. You really should put the male betta in his own 2.5g because bettas aren't really compatible with tetras because the tetras are nippy. A hard to find fish where I live are plecos I have only been able to find common plecos where I live. But I did see a clown pleco a few days ago but it really looked like a common to me.

my brother in law said he kept the two together but i cant see that hes telling the truth due to the fish not being there anymore

for me: pygmy corries, endlers, german blue rams, most plecs etc
list is far to long to think of anything right now. luckily i go to a lfs regularly that will order fish in for me if i ask.

cardinals are another for me. only one place had em and they wont get em anymore cuzz they say they have probs with them when the real prob is they keep adding them to tanks that have sick dying fish in them and they say the cardinals are the cause.....i hate chain stores.

in washington its hard to find healthy discus or that just

my local fish store

and i've never seen a zebra pleco nor have i found

freshwater sting rays

With almost 300 different species, most of the cory cats are seldom seen. In a years time, I might only see 10 or 15 different species in all of the lfs I visit. :/ It's usually a case of them having the same ones over and over.

We're short on plecs here, you have to order anything special :(

Wow, I guess I should consider myself lucky. I've seen all the fish mentioned above from time to time. Of course, I visit about 7 different LFSs around me, all within about a 15 mile distance. riverman, you've never seen a female betta at Walmart? Those seem to be the last ones to be bought.

I only saw a female betta once at a store and it was at wal mart and it was in one of those small cups and had advanced fin rot, the fin rot had already reached the body and was eating away at the body and the betta was still alive.

B) i live in kansas us, and i have anything and everything you all mentioned. it's easy to get anything here!

i currently am trying to sell a 3ft arrowana, a foot spotted pleco, tons of little communities, a 6" shovelnose cat, an 8" albino oscar, and two other 5" cichlids i just took in (i'm not too sure what they are). blue devil and ?

it's funny seeing these big fish sell for so much at my lfstores when i don't want them. i'm primarily concentrating on saltwater now, the fish seem to come with the equipment. :grr:
