Hi there,

Just getting into fish keeping and in the process of lots of reading and lots of reading , one question I do have that is bugging me a bit is when you put your hands in your tank do you wash them first or do anything special, so you don't introduce any ailments. If you do wash them what would you use as I'm guessing soap wouldn't go down to well with the fish.

Cheers,

Keith

I rinse my hands in hot (as high as I can stand it, without burning myself) water for about 30 seconds or so... I figure the heat could kill just about anything soap would. Then I wash my hands again (with soap) after doing fish stuff, so that they don't get ME sick ;)

I acherly use Long Gloves, to put my hands in the tank, as I suffer from exsma on my hands and use many creams, plus water is one of the main things that sets it off.

Hi Ferrikins, I would like to get some long gloves. Would you mind saying where you got them from? Thanks. How long are they? My tank is 15" deep.

I wash my hands with soap and water both before and after putting my hands in the tank. If you rinse your hands well after washing, I wouldn't think you would need to be overly concerned about transfering soap to the tank. I have never had any problems. If you use lotion on your hands, simply rinsing will not remove it.

Agree with above, there is no need to be paranoid. Wash your hands with soap and rinse and you'll have no problems.

I think we got them from Tesco, there about 13 inchs, from tip of middle finger down. my tanks a 15 inch to, if I need anything doing right down the bottom of the tank, my b/f does it.

just wash them with water. No soap or anything.if im putting anything in the tank i boil it

If you think about it the soap on your hands deffinatly cant be good for the fish.

if you rinse your hands there is no soap on them. If you don't use soap then you're not properly cleaning them.

I take my waterchanges seriously. Anytime i need to get my hand in the tank for any reason i strap on a full plastic body suit, but not before rinsing it ofcourse.

The soap isn't going to be any worse than the hand lotion that people use every day. Not to mention anything that you may have touched that simply rinsing with hot water won't remove or kill. Most bacteria isn't bothered by simply being exposed to 120 to 130 degree water for a few seconds and that's probably about as hot as anyone would be able to stand to rinse their hands with. Just rinse well and you will be fine.

Thanks for the replies, looks like as long as I give my hands a good rinse after washing I should be ok.

Thanks again.

Keith
