I've got some brown sludge that's built up on some of my ferns and it's looking pretty ugly.

I have a gold nugget pleco and a vitattas catfish but they don't seem to have an appetite for this stuff!

What is the best way to clean and keep clean the plants?

Thanks
Pete

i use some white filter floss as a sponge to wipe down the leaves every water change. other than that regular (weekly) water changes.

if you dont use filter floss buy a soft toothbrush for fish use only and use that.

i SPEND HOURS EVERY WEEK METHODICALLY REMOVING bga FROM THE LEAVES OF MY PLANTS. (Damn cAPsloCk!!!)
I would try to keep it natural if possible for ease of maintenance but if it gets too bad (like mine) you may have to resort to manual means. Then it's a case of finding out the cause of the algae and doing something about it.
