I got a fish off my brother today (he bought big ones and they attacked his little ones) one of them (it's like a ram/gourami im not to sure) has half a gill (where he breaths out of missing) well he has like the skin missing, but you can see inside like his flesh. I was just wondering if he'd be ok and heal slowly overtime? I think it was probably one of the big fish in my brothers tank, but mine only has small fish so he should be ok. He is breathing heavily compared to the other one though.
Thanks in advance,
Neal

P.S - I'm not sure how long he's been like this, it may of even been a perm injury, but i'm curious...

I would add some melafix to the tank and increase aeration, good luck.

I don't know what Melafix is and I have no way to increase aeration, as the only airstone I have is in my 4G wich is currently running upstairs with my UGF. Or is there any other ways to do it, just my mam will complain if I keep moving stuff and using up more plugs downstairs. =(

Thanks in advance,
Neal

My mam probably won't buy it online, but i'm going to Pets at Home in a few days so i'll keep my eye out for it or something similar, thanks for the help Wilder!

Good luck, just don't want it getting infected, keep water quality in peak condition.

I'd just like to add
I have a polkadot loach with a missing gill plate.
he is perfectly healthy, but you should be aware without a full gillplate
the fish will be more suceptable to poor water conditions and infections.

As long as your housekeeping is kept up, there is no raeson the fish shouldn't live a full life.

Today he is laying on the bottom of the tank, still breathing heavily, occasionaly he tips over but he fights it and lays straight, he's just laying in my plants at the minute, I need to do something quickly otherwise I think he might die...

Yes bless him he sounds bad, he sounds like he has a bactrial infection, i would go with a bacterial med like myxazin now, but be prepared the infection sounds like it got to him now, so fingers crossed and good luck.

I'm afraid he died earlier today, I tried my best though, also one of my corys died, she hadn't been right for the past few days, just sitting there not very active, whereas my other two were very active.

Sorry R.I.P. I would do some daily water changes on the tank, i have panda corys and vac the gravel twice a week as they are very prone to bacterial infections.

Bless him, will have to buy him a mate, good luck.

Everyone complains that my tank is very overstocked so I think that would be a bad idea, i'm going to wait until I get my new tank sorted out first and sell these molly fry! =D
