I've got a dog and a cat and no matter how careful I am I always see a dog hair floating in my fish tanks, arghh!! Should I be concerned? Anyone else experience this phenomenon?

No, but chances are you may want to remove the hairs, as, while they will rot very slowly, they may plug up filters and begin to look unsightly. Also, if your dog/cat has some sort of flea/tick treatment that is applied to the hair, it could cause aquarium problems.

I have this problem with one of my tanks, i found a solution by shaving the dog and cat

Serious though, one of the tanks does sometimes tend to get a few hairs in it, i just scopp them out, also before i open the lid now, i tend to wipe the top of it first when doing water changes, i just use the flap now to feed them as before i use to open the lid to do it... dont get hardly any in now.

are you positive its cat/dog hair?? i had lots of " daddy long legs, long stringy legs" in my tank.... but then i realised there were too many for it to be this, im now thinking its the tiny bits of plants that the fish have stripped turning black.. still a bit creepy tho..just a thought, you`re probably right :)

Yeh ive got the same problem, it's a pain in the ####. I would love an open top tank but for obvious reasons i can't

Just scoop them out when ever possible.

I dont have pet hairs in my tank, but I often see one of my long hairs floating past  Really should tie my hair back when Im doing water changes, aside from the occasional hair falling in, I end up with hair dipping in the water and getting wet with fishy water - Yuck

yeah we have two cats, their hairs get everywhere, we've also got an open topped tank, but it's high enough that they couldn't jump up into it.

also i do occasionally see long ginger hairs floating around in the tank

it's never given me a minutes concern in all honesty and i've never had a filter problem........ sink in the bath gets clogged up with hair all the bloomin time though if that's any help?!
