I was out in the field behind the house, as dads wiring a new stereo into his car.

Anyway spotted a Huge carpet of hairgrass growin along the side of the Garage.

Its about 3 foot long and about 15 inches deep and VERY Thick.

I am sure it is Hairgrass. so i got the spade to lift some up and its home to red ants

but it looks really healthy.

Could i transfer some to the Tank. I do remember having hairgrass in the Large pond 4-5 years ago so could have come from there(Marginal).

Course washing it very well to remove soil and insects and leave it to soak in 1 of the water butts for a while to acclimate it back into water.

Would look Very Cool - Yay for nature and free plants.

Did end up getting spiked by something in the grass and finger has index finger is killing me and swollen. got a cotton pad with witch hazel on it.

First off, that plant in the photos loots like a fescue grass, probably red fescue (festuca rubra), not hairgrass. Its also growing in a very dry location and that should be an indication of what'll happen if you put it in the tank -> it'll die.

FYI hairgrass is actually a rush normally found in marshes and normally grows above the water with only its roots submerged. It only really grows in tanks due to the careful attention is gets, ie lots of light, ferts and CO2. I know several experienced people who've have really difficultly with hairgrass in a tank.

Sorry to be so negative :)

Thanks Just wondered is all.
Looks so similair to the hair you find in the Marginal section/Pond Plants in the LFS

Yeh I wont disagree it looks good, but I dont think it'll be much good in a tank. Guess you could always give it a try and see? Just wash the ants out first!

Hairgrass.. I am trying it in my eclipse.. they I only have one piece of hair haha.. swipted it form a LFS.. it was floating at top the water.. haha.

Ive cut some off and have in a vase next to the fry tank, to see what happens.
Shook all the ants of it against the wall and then rinsed for about 10 mins to remove chems and crap and ant eggs.

will do a journal of it.

Day 1 in water and looking good. (Big Brotha Style)

Day 2

Pearling and still green and Fresh Looking.

pearlign is a characteristic I love of hairt grass.

Day 4 stil Pearling and water changed - as Plaster powder had made it cloudy.

i thought that if it was pearling it meant its losing its oxygen, and without its oxygen it will die in a matter of days, try tugging on some of the grass strands, they might float right off.

Its Grass, Starting Starightening out into flat strands. Was fun though
