hi

I have yet to have total success with hairgrass. Ive never been able to maintain a FULL green bush of hairgrass as a large part of it always turns brown...and stays brown.

It doesnt float up tho (the brown parts)....it doesnt seem to be doing anything...

The bush is growing green blades tho.... around the base. But not enought to eliminate the brown parts i think....

I have more than 2.5wpg over my tank but i am not exactly sure how much. I have very low CO2...but i am injecting it...haha...its not working as effectively. I also have a nutrient rich substrate.

what is wrong? is it normal for hairgrass to die off in the initial stage? its been planted in the tank for around 3-4 weeks tho... :/

I wish I could help. I never had success with hair grass. I had close to 3 wpg, laterite, tried the 'splitting into 2 strands each' planting (that was painful...worse than glosso). Maybe it likes co2? at the time I was only getting 20ppm max.

I found it grew new green strands, but turn brown as quick as it grew so it never seemed to getting any bigger (spread wider).

I would think you have some sort of nutrient deficiency, and you may have hinted at the most likely culprit.......your low co2 levels........

You have enough light to grow hairgrass at 2.5 WPG so something else has to be lacking, more than likely in your fertilisation regime, although very hard to tell exactly what because you dont give any water stats.

It can take plants sometime to establish themselves in a new tank, but in my experience this is usually around 2 weeks and it doesnt happen with all plants, some plants will take to the new setup immeaditaly and produce good growth,so it depends, but the fact that you are seeing brown bits (presumably dead bits) would lead me to believe something else is amiss, and i would start by looking at your water stats to eliminate the cause.

oh and I wasn't fertilising... :)

You were typing your reply the same time as me Sam, its probably a combination of factors.......... pesky hairgrass............. thats where i have the bba :(

Hairgrass I have found incredibly difficult to grow too, in fact I have never successfully grown it. It needs > 3w per gallon IMO and a lot of CO2.

I've been experiencing a relatively similar situation in terms of the health of my hairgrass. The center of it looks lighter and I guess weaker than the new shoots that have been growing out of the base near the edges... Mine however has shed a lot of those unhealthy center blades recently, but I also have lower light and no CO2 injection unlike you. Pesky hairgrass indeed

Why can't there be an aquatic plant that grows a vigourously and as easily as normal grass? *ponders*
Lol try glosso under the right conditions it spreads quicker than good gossip.
