Is anybody using the Hagen Plant Grow Natural System with CO2? The $30 isnt a problem for me, but i was wondering how often you need to use the refills and how well the system actually works. It would be for a 29 gallon with approx 2 wpg.

They are excellent IME.

The sachets are only dried yeast and bi-carbonate of soda. There's 1/4 tsp. of yeast in the "Activator" packet and 1 tsp. of bi-carb in the "Stabilser".

If you stick to these quantities then CO2 output will last about 3 weeks. If you want more output then increase the yeast - more output for less time.

Two units would be ideal in your 29G, having two is better as you can change the mixtures over alternately thus ensuring a stable CO2 level. With just the one unit you will need to add more yeast and replace the mixture more frequently to acheive a good CO2 output. Aim for 30ppm CO2. Use the CO2/KH/pH table linked in my sig to calculate your level. You'll need a pH and KH test kit.

Ive got a 33gal and it works good for me. The only problem is sometimes my fish are stupid and get stuck in the co2 diffuser. But its works quite good.

yeah i would listen to gf225. Ever since i purchased another unit and used his mixture reccimendations my plants are pearling and algae rapidly disappearing.

ok i'll have to go to the store sometime, thanks for the input :)

is this the hole behind where the tube is? My guppy did the same and nearly killed himself. I've put a blob of aquarium silicone just to block fish from going up there.

What exactly is bi carb?

EDIT:
Nevermind, I just read the label on my baking soda!!
LOL

you might wanna test your kh ppm and see if you can use the diy method that gf225 reccomended and not use the baking soda at all. Thats what my newest mixture was and i dont use the sachets anymore since the diy recipe seems to produce much more co2 than the packets IMO because my newest readings as of today are ph at 7.0 and kh 9 dkh which if im right is about 25ppm co2.

I was shocked when my little male platty that I had just purchased today did this too, if i hadn't been intensely watching him he could of died. I've blocked it off also now.

What a bad design, they need to do something about that as it is quite cruel.

I just bought mine 4 days ago. Just using one unit and there are plenty of co2 bubbles ( upto 3-4 on the ladder at the same time).

And I've noticed pearling of my plants today. :)

Excellent.

I might just buy another unit for my 45G tank.
defo recommend it.
