The CO2 is produced via the respiration of yeast (a living organism) so can't be "turned off" as such. It would be very hard to gas tank inhabitants to death by the yeast method. A successful planted tank keeper from this forum had two of these hagen systems for his 60litre, both were creating CO2 at a quick rate and he left them to do their own thing at night. Never had problems. Therefore I wouldn't worry about it. Generally in planted aquariums we advise good surface movement as this promotes good gas exchange (oxygen etc). Ripples are want we want. Nothing to break the surface as this would drive off CO2. So to reiterate, don't worry about disconnecting it at night.
