Hmm do you know what kind of driftwood it was? Did it come from an LFS?

Its not uncommon for wood to get a fungusy film stuff on it when its first submerged, you should of course, boil it or at least soak it for a while in boiling (or as hot as possible) water and give it a good ol scrub to get off anything nasty that could be lurking and soaking it allows some of the tannins in it to be leeched prior to putting it in the tank.

The browny coloured water is pretty normal (tannins) and are not harmful to fish and usually clear after water changes or you could add some carbon to the filter and filter floss or just leave it until it subsides itself over time with normal weekly w/c.

The fungus stuff usually goes as well after a while, certain fish will eat it, BN plecs love it (least mine does) as do snails, although unsightly, again not harmful to my knowledge.

The eggy smell isnt something Ive come across before with wood though, so maybe something was leeching that shouldnt have been, but without knowing what kind of wood it was its hard to say. Usually it leaves an earthy smell.
