hey guys i just put some melafix in my tank to repair the fins on one of my young angels and one of my platies... i have been reading about melafix and have been reading about how its killing fish... should i be worried? and #### why do they sell it if its harmful?

sorry if this is a really dumb question.. i just dont want any casualties..

thanks so much guys!

I've used it in the past to repair fins on loaches with great success. That's crazy; I've never heard it to be harmful.

Melafix has tea tree oil in it and that is toxic. However, in small doses it is fine and safe for fish. Follow the directions on the bottle and don't overdose it.

To work out the volume of water in the tank
measure Length x Width x Height in cm
divide by 1000
equals volume in litres

When measuring the height, measure from the top of the gravel to the top of the water level. If you have big rocks or driftwood in the tank, remove them before measuring the height.

There are 3.785 litres in a US gallon.

Make sure you have plenty of surface turbulence/ aeration when using it. The surface will sometimes develop a foam over it from the Melafix. It is fine and will go as the chemical breaks down.

what if i already began the dosage with all my decorations like driftwood and rock still in it? how toxic will that little bit extra be to my fish?

Truetotexas, was it my pencilfish you were reading about? The melafix or the primafix (I used both together, the instructions say you can!) may have killed all my pencilfish within 45 mins, but none of the other fish in the tank turned a hair (or should that be scale?) and I have dwarf chain loaches in the same tank. If melafix was harmful generally, I would have expected them to be the first to be affected. I have always assumed that some species of fish will be more sensitive than others to a given chemical; quite possibly pencilfish are the only ones that react badly to melafix and/or primafix.
