Hi,

We added 2 female guppies to our tank last Monday. Yesterday afternoon all fish were fine but last night I noticed one of the guppies hiding by the heater. On inspection I noticed she has about half her tail fin missing. She is staying mainly by the heater at the top but occasionally swims to the other side and back again. She seems to be able to swim ok and I will make sure some of the food will go near her when I feed them all. Does she have a chance of survival? (Can't take a picture at the mo)

I suspect it might have been one of the keyhole cichlids which were added to the tank at the same time. I'm pretty new to all this and the staff at pets@home told me they were compatible with what I had already in my tank. I also have 2 platy, 1 other female guppy, 3 male guppies, 5 neon tetra, 1 Pakistani loach and the 2 new keyholes.

I'd be very grateful for any advice.

well considering what a keyhole is.....cichlid that is i would only assume it would be them....i do have a guppy in my cichlid tank but he was chased like hell and i thought he was eating...only now over a month later is he accepted, so anyway yes i would blame your keyholes for this, platys may give chase but wont really do much, neons if im right "correct me if im wrong" are known for tail nipping ive no idea about the louch though,

can i ask have you cycled your tank? and how long has your tank been running for??

The tank (60 liter) has been up for a few months and is cycled. I do regular water checks and that's all fine.

It was pretty peaceful until I added the keyholes. They chase pretty much all the fish who try to go anywhere near the plants.

The loach doesn't really interact with any of them, he just ignores them and does his own thing so I don't think it's him.

I just wish the shop had been better at advising. I am not the one choosing the fish, it's my daughter. It's her tank and she is really fond of fish. She's only 11 but wants to be a marine biologist. I didn't want to start with a marine tank so got her this one. I always make sure she follows advice from the shop. Perhaps that's the wrong thing to do!

oh definatly, bets bet is to go over to the section on the site for more info on just starting out, when you say you have cycled the tank do you mean it was empty for those 2 months and you have been adding the ammonia or did you set it up and just add fish?? also its an idea to get hold of a water test kit, if you can take the keyholes back, im pretty sure that a 60 litre is to small for just one of them when they grow fully...
