Hi guys, one of my girlfriends guppies has had his tail nipped quite badly so it now looks like a trident, and only has about half of his tail left. He is one of three male guppies in the tank (with 10 neons aswell).

We have currently put him in a breeders net until his tail grows back, but roughly how long does it take to grow back? And what steps can we take to reduce the chance of this happening again? Would adding more guppies decrease the aggression in the tank? Or atleast spread it out so one isnt always picked on?

All tank stats are normal, and he swims around fine like normal, so doesnt seem to be any disease/illness.

Cheers,

In my experience you should start to see a bit of growth within approx 3-4 days. It's gradual, starts at the base of the tail, and spreads out from there. It grows clear at first so you have to look closely, then colours up. Mine was back to normal in about a month, but you'll see it swimming around quite normally well before then. :good:

Hi neons can be nippy but i would have thought 10 would be enough to stop that.
Can you see the guppies being aggressive towards each other?
A way to reduce aggression is to have 2 females per male but then you will end up with a tank full of fry so probs not best.
Make sure your water quality is good while your guppy has a rip in his tail to avoid infection.

Also be careful not to stress the male. being in a breeders net can be very frustrating for guppies - especially our little excitable males :)

Ye, i know him being in a breeders net isnt ideal, but its the best we have at the moment, he is being bullied in his normal tank (gfs), if i move him into my tank, I have columbian tetra's which im told would go for him, and my dad's tank has oscars, so dont think he would want to go in there lol. He doesnt look stressed out at the moment, but will keep an eye out, and will set up a quarantine tank in the mean time.

Since taking him out, non of the other guppies tail are being nipped, which is making me think its going to be a guppy rather then the neons who is doing the nipping.

If you think its the guppies then try adding lots of plants to break up the line of sight to avoid aggression. yeah i would avoid putting him in the oscar tank as well
Hope he gets better
