Hey all!

I've had my first batch of guppy fry for a while now (about 25 survivors from mom's first batch!), and I was wondering about their schooling behaviour as fry. Is this something they grow out of when they get bigger, i.e. is it a security thing being so small? They're probably at least half an inch now. I haven't noticed this with any other livebearer fry. :dunno:

How bigger tank are they in at the mo and does it have any other fish in it? The platy fry i have don't shoal as much, they tend to spend less and less time together in the main tank i have if they feel secure in it or aern't under stress.

I suppose one posible explanation for your fry shoaling behavior is that they havn't fully sexually matured and the males and females havn't begun to get terotorial; you will find as your male platys mature and become more interested in female they will become more aggressive with other male platys and you don't want them mating as this will lead to inbreeding which can lead to a whole load of other problems, i suggest you rehome some of them as you are bound to have some male platys amoungst them.

Well... I know for sure I don't have any platys. I have guppies.
Some are in a 5 gallon. Some are in a 20. Some are in a 10. There's one sailfin molly in the 10. The 20 is predominantyly female betta community. The 5 has one betta. I still can't sex them quite yet. They're color isn't even really developed.

Also... I've never had a territorial platy... :/

guppy fry will shoal, and if they are kept together throgh their fry stages they become very hard to seperate from eachother, they are a socail fish. i dont know about u guys, but have u ever removed a guppy from his group to be treated for illness or watever, they accually will worsen, they prefer the company of others. i dont think shoaling is the word as the groups arnt as closely nit, but u just can keep a guppy alone, they dont do well. fry of all livbeaers generally stick together for pretection, its just a surviveal tecnique, and they do get used to this and teh habit carrys into their adult life
