sorry, newby here about guppies,

how do I sex guppies, because my LFS sold me a black guppy as female and an orange/red one as male. But i want to be sure, so how do I tell?

and if i leave the baby fry in the comunity tank with 6 danios and a small pleco and two albino corrys, will any survive? or should i put them in a breeding net till they are big enough.

cant buy a new tank :-(

As stated in my last post guppies are good w/ danios unless you have a big tank as danio's will stress them out. Also, you need more than 1 female. Also, the danios will eat all the fry. You dont have enough room to keep all the fry. Males bodies are completely colored, or mostley. They have a gonopudim(sp?): http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt...l%3Den%26sa%3DN

Female dont. THier bottom fin stays straight down most of the time. Also, you need to get rid of the pleco. They eat algea till they get about 4 inches, then they will only eat pellets.

dont worry, getting rid of pleco soon. but the fish store guy seemed to know what he is talking about, and the one he said was female was found in the male tank, it has a black tail and its anal fin looks like the males. the male is bright orange/red. i will try to get pictures.

usually the male will have much brighter colors. The male usually has a more fancy looking tail fin. Much bigger and more billowy. here is an example. The male is on the left. The female on the right.

Generaly the females have a plane gray or yellow body with some colour on the tail as seen in the fish to the right in abzorbd's Pic.

Males usually have a more colour to the body and a much larger flowing tail (just like the fish to the left above).

The best way though (as some male look femaleish and visa versa) is to check the anal fin, males have a pointed fin called a gonopodium and females have a rounded triangular fin and a black spot on the abdomen just above that.

Helter

Haha, 5teady, the pregnant guppy photo as well.
usually the anal fin is more triangular, that female has it tucked up a bit.

The snakeskin female I wanted got sold :( but my tank isn't cycled yet so I had to leave her.

Sorry you didn't get the fish you wanted :(

thanks for replying so fast everyone.

the one they sold me as female is mostly grey with a black tail, but when i look at steadys picture it is possible that the female tucked in her anal fin. i found her in a tank of males and it appears she was nipped abit. should i just wait and see if she gives birth?

my mom doesint want to go to the store anymore. wonder why???

Sound to me like your mum purposly told your lfs to tell you they was male and female actually knowing they was male (she probably dont want them having hundreds of fry lol).

hmm, no she didnt because she stayed in the car, but she did seem happy when i told her they were both male! :/

Maybe the LFS didnt want to sell you a male and a female cos they may have thought you would take all the fry back to them and some dont like that..

Or maybe tjey just dont know what they are doing, i've seen Petsmart give me males males for the female price.
