There seems the be a rip in one of my guppies tails

I caught it from a stream with some mates, and surprisingly it was alive in 17'c water, i dont kno if thats naatural or not, but this one doesnt have any great colour, just a greenish brown

Is their any thing bad about this rip in the tail and anything i should do about it? i quarentined it before putting it into my big tank.

Ohh I don't ever put lake fish in with other sish in my aquriam you never know what kind of diseases or bacteria them may have but im sure they have somthing that you can treat thetail with cause I believe they have a tail medication for bettas

I hav yet to have a dead fish so i havn't got the same precautions as i guess other marine owners would.......

Wow, if he's greenish brown, some selective breeders would give so much for that, me included. I'm trying to strengthen the Guppy breed up, by using very dull, less inbred fish...and he sounds like just the male I could use. :p

Anyway. The rip in his tail could have come from aggression by his friends, or by just ripping it on something himself. It should grow back, but you could try some Melafix. In my experience, though, just clean water and a little bit of salt in the water helps a lot.

Just keep an eye on it, to make sure it isn't tail rot. I'm sure he'll be fine then, he'll be a tough little guy.

And Snailguy, not all lake fish cause problems. After all, a good amount of fish you see in fish stores are wild caught. They don't come from a special, non-diseased, antibacterial part of a lake, I assure you. :p

Definitely quarantine them though. :)

1 male 1 female
20 gallon tank with plenty of plants (other fish going in too)
hes been quarentined for a while now so he's going into the big tank ( i posted this a few weeks after i caught him

if you have enough room in your tank put 1 2 or 3 more females in there, have you got any pics of him he sounds like a really nice guppy

Could It even be a guppy though? just that it looks like a neon tetra (wich i hav in the tank) except it hasn't got the same great red n blue as the neon, but a brownish slightly green colour as iv already said, and its tail looks like a guppy tail, but it isn't quite as long and it is clear, ill try to post photos later but i can't now as my brother took my digital camera snowboarding

Hmmm....it might just look more like the wild Guppies, which is very different then the Guppies you see today. Pictures would be great, though.
