What should I do? Would adding a lot of plants before I leave be a good idea? That way the fry will survive even while being in the tank. Are there any precautions that I should take, because my sister will be helping me feed them.

Isaac

Yes, Plants are always good, as are rocks, wood, and general places for them to hide. I'm betting at least a couple will survive, maybe more, depending on which fish you have. And if you don't get too many from this batch, there's always the one next month to look forward too. :p

Precautions....I'd measure out the food for each feeding into something, like a baggie or a pill container that is marked with the day. That way you know they aren't being overfed, because you specified the portion yourself. :)

fry arnt dumb, they quickly learn to be afraid of teh adults and any shelt you can provide them will help alot. i would recommend putting fake plants on the bottom and floating some on teh surface and fry enjoy hanging out in both areas. and if you have tall plants that you can embed into the gravleand that travle all the way to the waters surface, that would be excelent. mosy livebearing adults will not actively hunt fry but just see them as a meal floating along throgh the water, so u dont have to get too carft with placeing the plants, just wanna provide them with a safe place to crash

Where can I get those pill containers...my dad has one but he only has one. I asked him where he got it, but he said it was given to him.

drug stores, pharmacys, probably cvs wallmart wallgreens

I just got back from being out of town for a month. Right before I left, two fo the mollies in my 55 gallon had fry, so I moved at least 70 of them into my fry tank. I thought that there couldn't be too many left in the 55 gallon. When I got back from being away for a month, there were at least 10 fry from the same batch as half of the fry in the 55 gallon. Plus there were at least 20 other fry in there, even some guppies. I have a lot of plants in my tank. Live floating plants, a whole bunch of silk plants and a big patch of breeder grass at the bottom. I also use glass marbles which are a GREAT place for the fry to hide. I can't even find them in there.

I think that I'm going to have to use the pill container method. I don't want to see half the guppies dead when I get home. Should I get a fish net, so that my sister can move the fry into a breeder net when she sees them?

Isaac

Sure, if you want to. Though tell her good luck catching them! Fry are sneaky little things. :p

I would use a breeders net. this net has holes in it so that the fry can swim out the bottom but the mother can't. This will save all your fry from being eaten.
