About 5 days ago I bought 7 guppies and 2 ghost shrimp for my 25 gal. tank.
I now have 3 of my poor guppies left (and my shrimp appear unharmed).
I'm willing to accept this sad occurence because all 4 of the dead fish came from the same petshop and died within a three day period.
My remaining 3 females seemed to be doing fine but just today the largest of them seems to have caught some strange disease, different from the one that killed the other 4 (which looked like some kind of mouth fungus).
She has a white spot on her normally dark tail where the scales are raised instead of flat. It doesn't seem like dropsy because she shows no signs of swelling, but these are my first guppies and I have no experience with dropsy.

Current tank status: around 80 degrees, ammonia and heavy metal filter in place, water de-chlorinated, two live plants (thriving), started medicating water with Melafix when the first fish got sick, am still medicating, removed active carbon filter as directed on Melafix instructions, guppies are the only fish in the tank, am very worried, loosing so many fish is depressing... two females are pregnant (one of which is sick)

Here's hoping you can help me out! (sorry about the long post...)

is this a new tank? has the tank cycled? IF it hasn't then the ammonia/nitrite is your problem
what does "ammonia and heavy metal filter in place" mean exactly?
If ammonia and nitrites are high, you are treating the systems, the cure is to get the ammonia/nitrite levels down, then the other symptoms will more than likely go away...
Please refer to newbies section for cycling a new tank.

from my understand your not sopose to throw in that many fish at a time.. 2 at most.. also how long has the tank been running for?...

The tank was running for about 2 days before I added the fish.
I have an ammonia filter in that also says it 'removes chlorine and other contaminants'. Sorry about the 'heavy metal' part- I was half asleep when I posted.

thats your problem, you have to many fish in your tank, a tank needs to be established for weeks before adding that many fish, I refer you to the new tank set up as this has been hashed over several times....
