I had four guppies in my tank but they didn't all pal around together, they split into two pairs.

one of the guppies in the pair died (due old age) and now the one that is left looks really sad, he wont go near the other two and sits and hides in the plants at the back of the tank only to come out for feeding.

Do they get like that if they are lonely or do you think he is ill, his fins look healthy but are a wee bit floppy, before they were really vibrant.

any ideas

How many do you have in total and what are their genders? It realy depends on what genders of guppys you have; an all male group will be less likely to group to together than say an all female group while a mixed gender group will vary on how many of each it has in total.
Your guppy would probably do well with some more buddys depending on what you already have in your tank as long as he's showing no signs of illness but i would be carefull because your other guppy may not have died of old age but illness.

I have three male guppies in total, the guppy that died was about 2 years old.

i thought about illness but the only thing I could think of would be to do with his swim bladder. But how could I be sure what it is.

What were his symtoms before death or any strange behavior he was exhibiting? The most common symtom of a swim bladder disorder is the fish finds increasing difficulty in maintaining balance/staying upright in water. This usually progresses to the point where the fish will not even be able to control which direction it is swimming in and will usually starve to death from here onwards because it can no longer aim for food to eat.

Swim bladder disorders can be for a variety of reasons but the most common are poor water conditions or internal bacterial infections or genetic reasons(although genetic ones are usually found in the fishes early stages of life).

No he wasn't swimming around like that, his swimming was fine.
The only reason I thought of the swim bladder was because he was sitting on the stones alot. But the guppies seem to do that alot when they are resting so I am unsure.

Just thought I would let you guys know that the guppy in question died yesterday evening, :rip: :byebye:

I checked him over but could not see anything untoward with him, no marks or anything. All the other fish are swimming around happily and look nice and healthy.

Do you still have the fish in your profile mentioned? What are your water stats i.e ammonia/nitrate/nitrite?

yeh the fish in my profile are there. my levels are:

amonia = 0

Nitrite = 0

Nitrate = about 35

checked yesterday afternoon
