for about the last three months now when i buy guppies they seem to be fine for around 3 weeks then suddenly get fin rot for no reason, (levels all ok) nothing chnaged in tank or area, except these fish never respond to treatment, whether in main tank or hospital tank, and eventully die with their tales shredding more and more til they die

well i sell fry when 90% of adult size to a lfs and said this to him and here is what he had to say

"guppys will never be hardy again, because all the batches which are coming from singapore and the far east approx 90% all UK guppy population for lfs have had a mjor disease which is being passed from one generation to another and thuis will be always a problem until they find a batch which is sound. These guppies never respond to treatment and will 90% time die even if caught early"

this lfs is now only accepting guppies from the public breeding their own and also from different countries no from far east

if this problems spreads to the US the the problem could see that the guppy is never hardy anymore, especially if you see how un hardy they have become since my parents generations

After speaking to 3 other LFS they all get their guppies from the far east and were opening admiting to this problem also (but not as much information) and they have to treat new batches for 2 weeks before selling to check how bad the batch is

very interesting have you guys and girls heard anything like this before? or experienced bad fin rot on guppies which is un curable?

let me know your thoughts

I bought some guppys today and some have stredded tails so i'm treating the tank with salt, and if it is really bad I tend to do salt baths, but it comes back after a while and they usually end up dying.

To say that guppies as a whole are weak is not true. A lot of it depends on the breeders and the water that they are breeding the guppies in. The southeast asian breeders sometimes pump their fish full of hormones so that they are brighter when they sell them or so that they develop faster. This makes the fish much more likely to get sick. Also the water is obviously much different than it is in Europe or the US so the fish are extremely stressed by the differences. A lot of pet shops don't quarantine their fish. People buy the newly arrived fish and end up with a lot of dead fish.

as i said this shop are very good and seriously quarentine and the problem lies from the suppliers but surely if nothing is done to stop these then the batches that are coming to the UK are going to very bad indeed, i ask now where they have come from before i ever buy fish and watch them closely for around 2-3 visits for signs of fin tot and then qaurentine myself and see but you still can never guarentee. just passing on the info

Thanks, as I didn't no that information.

so true theo when you just inspect the guppies a lfs recently tho, take a visit and yu'll know what i mean!!!!

I had the same problem! I dont know where this fishes are comming from (I suppose it's from around here somewhere) but it happens the same thing: I buy a guppy (male) and in 2-3 weeks it's fins starts to break and it dies in a few days-weeks. Females are more hardy but they die too, sooner or later...
I love guppies, but I stoped buying them because of that.

All the guppies in my area are pretty hardy. Mostly normal but there is a dead one in the tank every time i go there. Its just guppies though. Most of their other fish are really good with the exception of neon tetras.

I too stopped buying guppys for a while through finrot, but I gave in again as love the little guys, but still having problems with the finrot.

fin rot, is more to do with water conditions, and how stressed the fish is, although I would supose the guppy could be more serseptable because of there long tail fins.

I personaly never lost a fish to just fin rot. The guppies round here are very weak stock, I buy my fish from different place's to try and avoyed inbreeding. My fist Sucsesfuly litter born and raised (all suvived to sexaul matureity.) Yet there mother died 2 days after birth. I kept 3 females, bred from one of them and her she died and hour after birth, young all died, 2 lifed 4 months but had curved spines, and desition was made to put them to sleep when they stop being able to cope.

This week I lost the last female of the one's I kept, she was the smallest of the females I kept, she was 10 months old. Thats a very good age for a guppy in this house.

I have taken on to an exsperiment. To pur a male guppy, to my Mettalic Livebearers. I am hoping that breeding them (if posable at all.) will perduce hardy, colorful fish, it has just started so, will be some time before any results are known.

lastly don't give up on guppies, cos I shore one day you will find some nice hardy ones.

iv'e not given up on guppies just heck thoproughly but you know they are bad when the females get fin rot, my water has been totally fine all the time and it still happens, so looks like ill try for some us stock see if they are better

I've been having problems with the fry. I usually get 20 or so survive in the tank from each female. They are in my 55gallon which is cycled and only contains guppies, platy and neons.

At first they are ok, then slowly but surely they all get an opaque film on them and the tails start to shred. Its driving me crazy as I'm so careful with my water changes etc and test the water weekly. As they are only tiny and in such a large tank its difficult to get them out into a hospital tank and treat them, but I have tried but without success.

The adults were all from my mother-in-law and the same shop so I guess they are just passing something on to the fry but are able to fight it off themselves. Other guppies I've had that bred had no problems at all

Weird :dunno:

smae thing happened with my panda cories. One day they are spawning the next they have fin rot and swim bladder in perfect conditions.
