I have 6 female guppies in my community tank which hasnt cycled just yet, and they all look to be pregnant and have been for over a month now.
I know that one of my females will have been pregnant for 6 weeks this thursday, since it was that long ago she last dropped.
is this normal or is there something wrong stopping them from dropping?
thanks

there dropping fry and eaten them if you want to see fry put a female in a tank on her own and make sure there are plenty of plans for the fry to hide in

i dont have another tank, so a breeding trap is my only option for saving the fry. How do you tell when to put them in the trap?

also, i have a (i think) pregnant platy. i posted about her before and some suggestions were overfeeding, but after cutting her food back alot she hasnt changed and still has a dark gravid spot.
how long can platys hold on for before dropping, as she has had a dark gravid spot for about 5 weeks?

thanks

Alright you asked how to tell when there ready to be put in the trap, heres the thing it is crutial to know when to because if you put the livebearer in the small trap to early it can result in the mother aborting (killing her fry) or even worse her killing herself due to the stress a small area causes her. So I recommend you do what I do I wait till my livebearers are very squared off then I whatch them closly and when they drop there fry I catch them and put them in my floating trap so they are safe from adult fish. Then when they are about 2-3 months old and bigger then the parents mouths I let them in the community tank again. I feed my babies twice aday but many recommend 3 times. also I and others recommend water changes that help the fry grow tremendously.

Another thing you asked was about the gravid spots, this is not a good rule of thumb because they are decivers. Many gravid spots are just natural coloring. This causeing some new fish keeping hobbiest to think that there fish are pregnant when in reality they aren't I always look for the squareing off, there are pinned topics in this livebearers section that will help you with determining if there pregnant or not, and if you can't tell feel free to post a picture of them and we will give you feedback.

:good:
Also you asked how long will it takes platys to drop, it depends on the age, and some would say tempature of the tank, but just focus on this, usally the average platy gestation period (time of fry in the mother) lasts around 4 weeks but not rare for it to last into a 5th week

3 of the females are hiding behind the plants and one is slightly clamping her fins every now and again and shes not eating much.
does this mean she might be ready to drop?

yes they may Hide behind the plants . clamping of the fins is not normal do a 20% water change it should help clamped fins is usually down to water quality

I agree with the water change. I have also found this sometimes encourages for some of the fry to be dropped.

looking more closely, she doesnt seem to clamp her fins, more like she just doesnt spread her tail out at times if that makes sense?

Ok, all showed some sighs of pregnancy and all where at different stages, Photo six was the one with the fish that was the most along, I believe it was picture nine that was a nice picture of a male, incase you where wondering.

good luck with the drops :good:

thanks, i have 2 1 month old guppy fry in a breeding trap and 3 days ago i found another fry swimming free in the main tank, so i caught it and put it in the breeders trap with the other two. but this one was slightly smaller and pink and today i found another one and caught it.
i assumed that these were maybe just younger guppy fry but could they be platy fry?

Hi I think my guppy is nearly ready to drop she's realy big and getting harassed by the other females more than the males. Whats he best course of action keep her with the rest or have her in the breeder trap [It hasen't got the part to seperate the adult from the fry]

Hope you don't mind me asking not wanting to take over post topic
