I posted a topic on here about a week about asking how long guppies were pregnant for etc. I knew the guppy I had was pregnant and from the info I got...before she gave birth she would get huge and take on a box look. Apparently mine didn't she was so small..I assumed she had at least another 3 weeks if the duration of pregnancy is 4 weeks. Early this morning I saw the littlest baby fish in my tank so I quickly scooped it up and put it inside of my breeding net.

I'm just wondering if this is how a first time pregnancy goes with guppies?? I am not sure if she had more babies...but I only found 1...and if she did have more considering her size I dont think it could be more than 5 or so. I know it was her to who gave birth because now she is compleatly slender and the black gravid spots are now faint.

Well just thought I would post this..as I am confused and hope someone who knows more about guppies can fill me in on what happened here.

Thanks!!

first time pregnancy are usually just 12 babies...
my 5 month old female has been pregnant for 2 months now and is just now getting bigger she started to show signs a little bit ago......

She will have more babies and yes she probably had about 12 and ate all but the one that got away.... my 3 year old guppy had 7 babies the other night and I could only save 2 she ate the rest...

Did you buy her pregnant or did she become pregnant after you got her home (from one of your males if you have any)??

Hope this helps
Erin

Hi there,

I really don't know if I bought her pregnant. I do have 2 males..and the 1 male was displaying to her a lot...so it's possible he's the dad. She didn't look pregnant although she did have the black spots so maybe she was. I just can't believe she gave birth when she was still so small. With her second pregnancy will she get really big or?? How many babies do guppies usually have?? I've been reading that they can have up to 100 is that the norm or do they usually have less?

Why are some pregnant so long?? 2 months thats such a long time to me.

Yeah well I only found the 1..although there could be more hiding under plants and stuff. This is the second time my fish have given birth before I was able to get them into the breeding net. I have a swordfish who was absolutly huge..and during a week ...I put her in the breeding net twice..but she seemed to stressed and after like 2-3 days she wasn't giving birth so I let her out...and then one morning she was super slim..so I knew she must of given birth during the night which was really sad....but just like I found this little guppy..I found 1 baby swordfish...and I've kept him/her alive now for almost 3 weeks..it's sooo cute!!! It's grown so much!!

Do you have just guppies or?

Thanks for your help!! :)

when i was at the lfs the other day i saw a guppy that was quite young and quite small and she had just had some fry. i would say this was her first pregnancy too. mine was quite big and she had about 50 fry so i would say this wasnt her first pregnancy.yours could possibly have more tommorrow and the next day.my platy took a week to finish having her first brood.

guppys can have up to a hundred fry but i dont think anyone has accually had it happen. 30-50 is most common. somtimes a guppy"s firs pregnancy can take up to a week or so. i would keep an eye on her and expect a few more fry. :D

I"ve read somewhere that some guppys can have up to 400.... lol I think thats why they eat them....... for once my female guppy didn't eat for 4 days and still isn't eating I think she's lost her mind. I now have 37 babies all two together with the 23 fry that are 3 weeks old can't believe how much bigger 3 week old fry is...
This female of mine that keeps having babies lol i'm taking her to my 10 year old niece let her have a nice time with the babies what should I do about getting her to eat I mean she did get about 12 fry my other female got 5 and I came out with 14 then lost one and found another one...

I have all guppys 4 males 4 females and 37 babies ...I need to find another tank
I have to many fish in this one 10 g
I have one female that is a swordtail really pretty....

My female I'd say she is about an inch and half long (6 months old)and she still hasn't had her fry I've had her 2 almost 3 months now.....

take a flash light and go up and down the rocks (or whatever you have ) and look in the plants.... thats how I find mine....

Good luck
Erin

Today I noticed that 2 of my female guppies gravid spots are super black...they arnt very big....about as big as my last female who just gave birth...the real small one

I was thinking if the real small one gave birth then these 2 will probably do the same..so I caught them and put them in the breeding box thingy....but then they seemed so stressed that I let them back out. I felt so sorry for them!! My tank is pretty heavily planted...I'm just wondering if I let them have their fry out in the open whats the chances of the fry surviving?

Right now in my breeding net I have 1 tiny 3 day old guppy and 1 3 1-2 week old swordfish. How sad is that? They must be the toughest little fishes to survive I guess :p

:fun: well alot should live they only eat the ones that don't get away... the breeder net is only good for putting the babies in the more babies she has the more you will get. you just have to really watch and know when its just about time for them to give birth... keep an eye on then and keep us updated ...

If you want you can have some of mine lol
