Hi

My Guppies have just started to drop fry, I have read that they fall pregnany every 25-40days after insemination even if no male is present and dropping 12-60 babies at a time. With this in mind, what is the normal humane thing to do with the fry. I have no space for another tank so rearing is out of the question. My local pet shop advised I just allow the pregnancies to go ahead without using a breeding tank and just allow the other fish to eat the fry  , surely there must be something better than that I can do?

Cheers

If rearing is out of the question, there isn't much you can do.

If you were prepared to take them on I would suggest a breeding net or trap for the interim, but if you can't seperate them, you'll have to let nature take its course.

Whats your tank like? If its heavily planted, so may survive until they are big enough for the LFS to take. I doubt they would take fry though.

What your LFS suggested is survival of the fittest, which is probably your best bet. Usually a few will survive. Otherwise another option is selling them or giving them to a LFS.

If you have room for the fry to go when they get older, you can always raise them in a breeder net. Or maybe a couple depending on the number of fry.

What exactly is your situation here? I'm slightly confused, and I'll be able to help you better if I know more. :)

Thanks for the responses.

I do have space for a few fry when they get older. I current have 2 fry in a breeder trap (not tank as my first post suggested)which I intend to keep. I didn't see anymore which suggests to me that the pregnant female gave birth during the night and the rest of my fish were treated to a midnight feast. All I wanted to know really was if survival of the fittest was the right thing to do for the next batches that come along. If so then I'm happy to let nature take it's course.

Thanks

Dave

Ah, okay. Survival of the fittest is fine, it's often the best way for fry control. You might ocasionally see an extra Guppy or two pop-up you didn't even know was there! I've had that happen to me many times. If you do happen to see the females giving birth, and you want to save a few, your breeder net method will be the best. As long as you have room for the fry when they grow up. :)

Survival of the fittest is going to be kinder than letting the tank get severely overstocked, with the ensuing ammonia poisoning etc. I practise this and still get enough surviving fry to keep me going, with the occasional surprise: found a guppy today which I didn't know I had!

I THINK SURVIVALE OF THE FITTEST IS WRONG.WHERE ABOUTS ARE YOU AS IF YOU ARE IN DERBY OR NEAR BY I COULD TAE SOME OF OF YOU IF YOU WOULD LIKE.IF NOT ADVERTISE IN THE PAPER MAYBE AND SELL THEM.
