My fry are nearly 6 weeks old now and i still cant tell the difference between males and females. At what age can they be told apart? Do males get colour first are females smaller than males?

at like 2 weeks. you should see the gravid spot in the females buy now.

Yes males get their color first, as females usually dont have much. And no, males arent bigger, the girls are.

At 3 months they should be sexually mature(can breed and gonopodiums should show), but you should be able to tell by atleast 2 months old. The easy give away is to see any colouration/patterning on the body. If one day I see leopard patterning forming on a fry, it's 100% male. It's been my fail proof method for a long time. :)

Definitely go by the tummy fin...the females is wide and rounder, like circular or wedge shaped, the males multiple and long and narrow, the gonopodium as it's called. I'm wondering if I put something into the water here as my females have alot of body colour for females, iridescence right up their sides. Right cuties. Body shape can sometimes help sex them...females rotund, males slender....but below a certain age I can't tell who is who. Anyways good luck. I had one fry that seemed to change from "i dunno" to "MALE" overnight and trying to get that sucker out of the tank took me two weeks! He LOVED being with the females and would hide and swim lower down the minute he saw me coming. Finally got him into the male "monastery" tank. Sneak!
