One of my female guppies gave birth about 2 days ago. I read that you can feed it liquidfry, first bites, egg yolk, daphnia and crushed up flake food or pellets.

I have tried several different types of food recommended for the fry in my 1 gallon aquarium and they don't seem to be rushing to the top to eat it. In fact, i really don't know if they are eating at all.. i never really see them eat but i do put food in there several times a day. And i'm going to clean the aquarium 2 times a week.

My question is, is this normal? How do i make sure the fry are eating?

:D Congratulations of you guppy fry! :fish:

:) Well, I think it depends of the fry. My baby guppies are constantly at the surface looking for food, but my baby swordtail nevers goes to the top and I have to sink the food so she gets some.

Do you have plants (or some sort of hiding place) in the tank with the fry? I've read that they can get paniced if they don't have anything to hide in and they wouldn't feel very secure. I feed my fry First Bites and crushed flakes. Have you tried sinking the food? :p

Thank you, this is my first batch of fry. Right now, i'm using mostly first bites in case they eat it at the bottom and daphnia which mostly floats at the top for quiet a while.

I have 2 big bushy plants and a tiny plant in the tank along with some small gravel. They have so many hiding places that it takes me quiet a while to find them unless they are swimming out in the open.

The fry use to be hiding constantly where i never even knew if they were still alive or not but as time goes by, they seem to be exploring more out in the open, except for 1.

One of my fry seem to not know how to swim. I have watched it and it is always on the bottom, and then it looks like it is trying to swim but only goes downward, like a jump never actually swimming. I'm a little worried, but my other 3 are doing just great.

Which is perfectly normal. Plants or no plants often newborn fry will hide or school together at the bottom of the bowl because they're scared. This is very dangerous time for them b/c they're considered food for many fish including their parents , so they're very cautious . Don't worry if for a couple days the fry don't come up to the top, mine didn't. After a week you'll see them all happily eating at the top again as they begin to see there's no predators around :D

I thought about making this 1 gallon aquarium my birthing tank along with being my fry tank, hence lots of plants. But now i'm afraid that as these fry realize there is no predators, and then i add a female guppy about to have birth, she might eat them because they don't think they have to hide. And if they do hide, then they will be scared to swim around again.

I have heard about those breeding containers, one with a fine mesh and comes with plants while the other is plastic. Also, there is a lot of controversary if these stress out the fish. I thought about buying one of the biggest plastic ones i can buy and try it out. The ones without the V part and with a grate for the babies to hide in the bottom don't seem that bad. What do you all think? I don't like losing fish for reasons i could have avoided but i don't want to lose the fry either, they are so Cute!

Take all the different fish food that you got ,mix and crush them together. they wont resist...
