My tank completed it's cycle recently. I initially bought 3 cory metae and 3 botia striata. After posting on here I was told I should have fully stocked my tank. So 3 days later (thats saturday) I got 2 more cory metae and 2 guppies. I couldn't get the 2 dwarf gourami cos they were still acclimatising in the shop (so I am going to leave it a month before getting them).

Yesterday (saturday) the guppies were fine, swimming about, eating.

This morning I noticed that one had a dodgy looking eye. And both guppies were just swimming at the top but staying quite still.

By the afternoon the guppy with the dodgy eye died and when I took him out, the other guppy perked up. And now he's swimming about being nosey and generally a lot happier.

Do you think my botia might have attacked the guppy? And do you think the other guppy wasn't happy because the other one was dying?

My params (19 UK gallon):
Nitrite:0
Nitrate: 20-40
pH (ranges between 6.4 and 6.7...I have CO2)
Ammonia: 0

FYI, the 2 new corys have settled in very well with the other 3. All are very active and are eating.

What did the eye look like, some guppys do stay with sick one's not very often though.

:rip: Little guppy.

You should get the remaining one another friend as soon as possible, guppies don't handle being without others of their species very well. As for why he was crook when the sick guppy was in with him, it can't be nice watching a friend die.

I don't know about the botia... -_-

Glad to hear the new cories are settling in nicely. :)

The eye was...I don't know how to explain it. When I got him, both eyes were jet black like the healthy guppy. But his right eye was kinda of white. Like a white ring in the black. but it wasn't swollen or anything. Also I forgot to mention, he had like a white mouth.

I shall get 2 more guppies next weekend.

Was his mouth slightly fluffy, sorta like cotton wool? If so, it was probably mouth fungus. The white ring on his eye may have been the beginning of cataracts...

Good choice to get more gups.

Hi,
No it didn't look like fungus. It looked as though he had put white lip stick on.

I'd go with cateracts. Do you think maybe he was ill before? Or could it have been my water conditions? It's sad when a fish dies so soon. I feel really responsible. I thought the guppies would be the last to die as I thought my botia and corys would be more sensitive.

Sam

I think it is quite likely that the fish carried the disease from the LFS....I think it is very unlikely to be anything to do with the Striatas
