So yesterday I got my first big batch of guppy fry from one of the big females which i think comes up to about 15-20. I thought she had another week but i went ahead and moved her 2 days before she had delivery in a small 1 gallon tank. I was so happy that i moved her in time to save that many fry!!

Anyway I decided from now on i wanted the birthing mother to always give birth in a seperate tank so i can save that many fry again because before then i had only gotton about 1-5 fry each batch in the main tank. Note: The mothers were in the main 10 gallon (and only 2 batches) with no divider, i was planning on using the divider this birth but because of the empty 1 gallon i went ahead and moved the pregnant mother. I did try using a breeder box at one time but it only stresses out the mothers to give miscarriages so i decided against it.

Well I have another big female due to drop any day now therefore I bought a 5 gallon Hex Aquarium yesterday. Before yesterday i kept the 15-20 fry in the breeding box but i realized that the box is way way to small the fry wouldn't even swim around. I took the divider out of the main 10 gallon tank that i was using as a birthing area and put it in the 5 gallon to give the birthing mother 1 gallon of space while i give the fry the rest of the tank so i can keep many many fry at once. In the 5 gallon Hex now the fry swim around and pick at things =D

I haven't noticed any of the fry swimming over to the 1 gallon birthing area but i put a big bushy plant in there. Also I put several bushy plants in the main part of the 5 gallon tank. I plan on feeding the mother several times a day just smaller meals so she isn't very hungry all day in case any of the fry do swim over there.

Does anyone see any problems with this setup? Also, i read that a good way to get fry is to suck them out like when you do a water change? Well some of the fry are pretty powerful swimmers and would keep swimming down and not getting sucked up when i tried that. Any suggestions?

Edit: Nevermind about the sucking fry out part, i just remember about the turkey bastor (spelling) which I think will work great.

Thanks! I try to make sure i give fish the most room possible. When i go to pet stores and see the fish, i swear those fish have frownies! They look so unhappy and so cramped, makes me never want to do that.

I do like guppies colors but this whole birthing process is so much fun! I love watching the little guys grow up and swim around.

OMG! So i came home today and was watching the fry from the side of the tank for a while and then for some reason i check to see if the female in the 5 gallon hex has given birth yet and she was as skinny as a rail!!!

Well i look in her birthing area and see no fry and then i look at the rest of the tank from the front of the tank and guess what! I have built the perfect breeding setup. All the fry were on the correct side... i can't count them but there must be at least 25 fry now in the tank.

After I notice her trying to chase the fry through the divider i take her out and put her back in the main 10 gallon tank. So now whenever the females give birth, the fry will go to the correct side without getting eaten and she can't get to them at all.. no chance of any getting killed because of not hiding.

I noticed the fry start swimming in the birthing area soon as i took the adult guppy out. I thought about taking the divider out since i got no females near birth but then i'll just have to put it back when i do got very pregnant females. Do you think the fry will learn to go back to the main part to be fed? I mean i feed them in the exact same spot so they will get use to it.

Either way.. i definately recommend this setup for anyone trying to save as many fry as possible. Yay!!! at least 25 fry!! =DD
