Hi,

I have a 35 us gal hexagon tank. In it i have

2 dwarf gourami
6 red eye tetra
1 pleco
1 bamboo shrimp
3 male and 2 female guppies

I ran into a lot of problems earlier with the tank in regards to ammonia levels and such but they are worked out. PH is around 8.3 (tap water level)

Recently, one of the guppies has been following and nipping at the gouramis constantly. I was thinking that this had to do with having less females then male guppies.

Any other reasons? I was considering setting up a dedicated guppy tank but I would like to figure this out and avoid it if i could.

Thanks!

AC

To be honest you shoud never keep gouramis with guppys as usually the gouramis are the fin nippers, probably geting his own back, you will have to sort the probelm out by rehomiong the aggressive guppy.

You need at least 2-3females per male guppy, i would also advise you rehome the offending male guppy and buy 4 more female guppys- once a fish turns into a bully there is little you can do about it apart from rehome the victum fish or the bully fish, the male guppys will also be harrassing the females a great deal because you have so few at the moment.

You may not have to re-home the bully yet. He is probably frustrated because he has to compete with the other males for 2 girls. He may be the aggressive male, and he is taking it out on the Gourami too. As advised, I'd get your stocking to 2-3 females per male. This may kill the aggression towards the Gourami. If it doesn't, you will have to either seperate them or re-home one. :)
