Heya,

I've tried guppies a few times now, they never seem to survive past the first week, I'm not sure why, on the whole everything else thrives , normally lose a few in the process. But with guppies the whole load just die more or less as soon as they're put in.

If any of you keep guppies(successfully) have you got any advice on how i can make it a more guppy-friendly environment :D

Cheers

TBH, guppies are actually quite fragile now due to inbreeding. I know most people who have had long-lived guppies have bred them themselves, or got them from a breeder. You could try that, as long as you make sure you have plenty of different genes.

Tryed keeping guppys twice still died, don't keep them now, inbred to much for there colours, poor things as they are lovely lively fish.

I had the same problem untill I had one that I just got from lfs gave birth right after I put her in a tank and after that Ive havnt been able to get rid of them all.

Ive never had a problem with guppies :p

A few days ago i gave 2 females and a male that i bred, to a friend. Their thriving in her tank now!

Back when i started and didnt know anything about fish i started with guppies. They all did great for me!

I started with guppies about ten years ago and the same fish are still living in mine and my fathers tank, though different generations. I have found them the most easy to keep, dont mind low temps, dont die during cycling (mine anyway). I have not bought a guppy for years as we get a good supply from the origional fish, so I can't comment on current stocks in lfs's.

Only suggestion I would make is that you keep a ratio of 3 females to every 1 male (advise is usually 2:1 but IME the females still get harrassed at this ratio) or just keep males. My father keeps both, I only take the best looking males from his tank for mine. Fry are limited from my dads tank as he has a raphael catfish in thier too so only a few fry grow big enough to sex for my tank.

I haven't had any luck with guppies. When I first bought my tank (about 11 yrs ago) I had guppies with no trouble and even had a big batch of fry but nowadays they just aren't working for me.
