 Please could you tell me why my guppies mainly 1 of them keeps staying in the corner of the tank
near the top of the water, sometimes a few of the other fish stop there but mainly its this one fish, i have 3 of these 1male 2female. sadly i have just found the male dead in the greenery, but this fish is still at the top, i feed them all twice a day, If any of the fish have babies will they be live or egg?
thanks Gerry

Welcome to the forums :)

Ok - first things first - in future, when you buy fish, research them and their requirements first. Guppies are livebearers which means they'll give birth to live fry - never eggs. The ratio of 1 male to 2 females is perfect for them.

What otehr fish are in your tank and how many? What size is the tank? What are your ammonia, nitrIte and nitrAte readings?

Your guppy sounds like it is gasping for air at the water's surface. This is usually a sign of bad water quality and/or and uncycled tank. Do a big water change with DECHLORINATED water and then read the links in my signature about cycling. This is absolutely crucial if you want your fish to live.

Also lower your water temperature about 2 deg right now. The lower the temperature, the more oxygen can dissolve in the water so the easier it'll be for your fish to breathe if the problem is a lack of aeration/bad water quality.

I had the same problem soon after i first set up my tank, and arount this time i had loads of fish die, it was horrible. The pet shop said to add an air stone, and within a few minutes of this being on, they were absolutely fine. I also did about a 40% water change. Now i have a really powerful air pump, with 2 small airstones and 1 6 inch airstone, the fish love them.

i dont uasually respond like this but for goodness sake dont treat this person like an idiot there are plenty of people here that impulse buy and with guppies it is natural for these to sometimes hover at the surface in the same place, they are sometimes fragile fish and need adjusting to the environment thats all they are doing if all your fish were in bad quality water then they would be scattered around your tank at the water surfacenot just in one place

I don't know what happened there, I think my computers going a bit insane!!

It is hard to know everything about the fish you're buying; I knew that guppies were livebearing, but nobody ever told me how quickly, or to what extent they will reproduce - if I'd known that i might have thought more carefully about whether to have them or not.

Its not my place to say, i know, but I honestly don't think anyone really treated this guy like an idiot, he asked for advice, and got it.
I wish I'd known about this website when i first set up my tank, I had a similar problem to this, and had to wait until the monday morning for the pet shp to open, before i could ask 4 advice.
