I have a male guppy who has had a shredded tail for months and wont respond to any treatments I've used. The tail has grown back slightly in 2 areas but not a whole lot. Do you think it will always be like that?? He's been in a breeding net for over a month now and I am really feeling sorry for him. :/

I don't think he has fin rot anymore...as I see no white edging or red edging :dunno:

Put him in a salt bath solution i tablespoon to the gallon, and if you have no scaless fish add some salt to his tank as well this will help with the tail.

Hi Elisabeth

some fish will never be the same after an attack of finrot. I think this is one of those times.
realease him from the breeding net and see if more exercise encourages new growth.
All the best.

Yeah I have been adding salt and that hasn't helped either. Like Wolf said and I am also thinking that his tail will just always look this way. I've released him from the breeding net and I guess I'll see if he gets better or just stays the same.

Thanks :D

Some fancy strains I've had seem to carry genes that produce tails like that. All of the developing males grow 'shredded' looking tails as they mature. The females look fine.

No he isn't with the corys luckily:)

I dont know if he ever had fin rot or not it was hard to tell...it could be what you say about the fancy strains carrying the genes for shredded looking tails :dunno:

Lots of my males have had uneven or tattered looking tails too. It does make it a little hard to tell if their tails are healthy. Once bright's tail got reduced down to almost half it's original size before I cured him and his brother, Peanut had a big notch out of his tail too. Now Bright is the only one of his type left, but his tail never did grow back. I even have one girl now who I treated for a little while, and she stopped getting worse, but her fins still look trimmed. Some of my fish hate breeder boxes and get all lethargic if confined.
