I've been treating my fish tank with Pimafix for Columnaris. It seemed to clear up on the mollies but now my guppies seem like they are melting. It's normally the tails but you can see it's effecting all the livebearers in other ways from how they are swimming.

Should I do a 25% water change? It doesn't seem to be effecting the non-livebearers.

Have you quarantined the sick fish?? What are the levels like in your tank?
If you have poor water conditions you need to take care of that ASAP or treating the fish would be pointless since they would continue to be under stress and stay sicko...let us know!!

And what exactly does 'melting' mean...?

PH: 7.0
AMMONIA: 0
NITRATE: 0
TEMP: 78F

I have alot of sick fish in this tank again. Problem is I brought some fish through courier that got cold, so they are taking up another tank that is being treated. I don't think it would be a good idea to mix them.

When I say melting, I mean the tails are turning see through and eventually dissapearing. There is no fungus on them. Just found 1 dead in the tank. Talk about everything going wrong all at once. I kept these for years. I have 3 year old fish in there. I think I had columnaris in there, that has been treated and the white fungus left the tank. Now I have fish melting! Do you think it could be my girlfriend cleaning the tank cabinet and outside glass with cleaners? Don't worry I havn't said anything to her, I may get my head bit off!

how long has the tank been set up? has it been cycled properly?

Yes mate. I cycled it for 5 weeks in total and the tank has been set-up now with fish in it for around 6 months. I have monster kissing G's in there that are 3 years old and a sydnotis etc.

I could set up a small hospital tank and take a water from a good tank and 1 filter for a while to add good bacteria. Could that be an idea?

yeah that would work if it is cycled, was just suprised as the nitrate is reading 0

I'll do another test but something is really wrong. I've lost 2 guppies since I last posted!!!!!

I'm going to move all the livebearers to another tank and also do a big water change on the main tank. I think the water is poisoned with something!

maybe something has happened to cause the good bacteria to die off. have you cleaned your filter totally rescently in tap water or anything else that may have caused it

No I havn't mate. I'm normally on the ball with all this and I clean my filters in the fish tank water.. I tell you what... I've just remember what I did 2 days ago!

I dropped a 13A fuse in the fish tank and had get it out quickly with the net! Could that have done it?

thats a question i cant answer but id say it is possible that it cause something to happen with the water and good bacteria, im sure someone may have some more ideas on it

I've steralised buckets and nets when my tank had the columnaris which cleared quick but only in boiling water.
Only other things I can think of is that it's some cleaning detergent that has got in the tank.

I keep my hands clean and rinse thoroughly before messing with the tank, clean the filters properly, use the correct buckets and things that are boiled. No new fish have been added. Nothing has changed inside the tank apart from a small water change and the treatments Myaxin and Pimafix.

It's purely the livebearers though.

some treatments can kill off the bacteria in your filter, i dont know much about it though but there are several people on here that will help you

cleaning detergents could also have the same affect if they got into the tank.

to be honest if all your levels are 0 then its probably not this thats the cause anyway as only high levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate will do any harm

Something has gone terribly wrong. I've never lost fish so quick. I've lost another couple, suprise swordtail has died showing it's not just the guppies. Nothing showing on him at all. I've moved just about all the livebearers now to a hospital tank, I've set up with water and filter from a good tank set-up I have. I'm not going to treat because I have no idea whats going on but surely the good water will make a difference.

Am I wrong or have you not mentioned the NITRITE level...?
I've heard you say ammonia, nitrate and ph..
Probably a good idea to continue with water changes in case something did get into the tank..
let us know!
