My friend is quarantining her new guppy in a bowl and plans to keep him in this bowl for a week. Is this OK or should I say something? It is unheated and unfiltered, although she said she put in some cultured gravel from another tank.

EDIT: She just called, wants to know if her neons will be ok in a bowl for quarantine in the future. I don't know what to tell her. I wouldn't do it, but is it OK?

not a good idea. The guppy may not even live.

Quarentine tanks need to be 10 gallons so that you can treat all the fish if they get sick, plus you should quarentine for 3 weeks, not just one.

What size tank will the guppy be going in, and what other fish?

even worse for the neons. They are the weakest fish I know! Also, if she has them, why would she want to quarntine them in a few weeks? That would be pointless. Make sure she has six of them, and her tank though should have been set up for more than 10 weeks for them to have a chance.

Ok. That is what I thought but I wanted imput. I will call her.

Actually, Guppies are usually just fine at room temperature, and many, many are kept that way. They're even happy enough at room temperature to propagate in the usual fashion and numbers.

Neons, however, will probably die. Quickly.

Not wise, the guppy more than likely won't live a week in the bowel :(

It will survive, I'd imagine, but not thrive. Although it depends where she got it from- if it was from an individual breeder, it probably won't be so inbred and a lot hardier. If it was from a chain shop, then chances not so good.

It also depends on how high room temp is, I suppose. Some people keep their houses warm, some cold. In the latter case, nothing but coldwater fish should be kept in unheated tanks. In the former case, it's usually quite all right.

i'd be most concerned about water quality and aeration. she'll need at least an airstone in there and should perform major water changes (50+) on a daily basis to keep ammonia levels under control.

she should at least put in a cycled sponge filter or something. the guppy should be fine at room temp as i've kept them at 70 degrees which is pretty close to room temp.
