hi, i've got a tank with:
1 betta
12 neon tetra
1 clown loach
8 platties
8 male guppies
1 knife fish
2 silver mollies
4 rummy nose
several assorted bottom dwellers

i noticed that my water was cloudy so reduced feeding but realized that the filter was broken, fixed it but kept feeding to once a day rather than two small amounts a day to help clear water. just before this happened i brought three guppies from the same shop, one died within two days which didnt shock me but since i've reduced the feeding the other two have gone a.w.o.l.(on the same day) aint seen them for three days and searched the tank with no joy not even a corpse. asked my other fish what happened to them but for some reason their all sticking to the same story :shifty: . sounds like a stupid question but do you think that any of my other fish have eaten them, they were perfectly healthy and the most wonderful chocclate colour. not to sure whats happened dont like to think that they were eaten as my betta and my knife fish ( sometimes notoriuos for things like this) are the sweetest and the most placid fish in the tank. i must say that my female silver mollie has the attitude of a bear with a sore head (called her anne robinson). do you think that because i put them onto to rations it's turned into, every fish for his/herself?

whilst i'm at it, heres another question....
my micky mouse platy has swollen up quite quickly and i was sure she was expecting but she doesn't have a visible gravid spot, there is something there but not as dark as i woukd have thought it would be, shes a very pale orange colour so i would have expected it to be obvious to see. am i just hoping to hard that i'm gunna be a grandad or is it possible that cause of the size she is, is she gunna give birth to a world record number of fry. or is my little girl poorly. have recently introduced platties so still learning about the breed. thanx darren

Platies do not always show gravid spots, depends on the fish rearly.

You have a lot of fish in your tank, what size is first?
Many bottom dwellers will eat dead fish very quickly, pleco's and locahes do so very quickly.

the betta could have done it too. almost every betta person on here (including myself) would never recomend putting a betta in with guppies. even a sweet betta will kill and eat a guppy if he feels like it. or if it tried to rape him as most guppies will...to anything

I had a guppy go awol, we finally found him that evening. He'd jumped out of the tank (there's a very small opening near the filter), over the side, off the tank bench then under the tank stand. Needless to say he was very dead and very dry, when my husband finally found him, I was devastated.

All fish can potentially jump and completely sealing all holes in the top of a tank and lowering water is the only way to prevent that.

As far as other reasons for a fish to go missing, there is simply put, a chance that someone has eaten him. Fish are opportunistic and, while they may not hunt other fish for food generally, they will make a meal out of an already dead fish. One of your fish may not have tried to eat the Guppy alive, but the rest of the fish in the tank are possible culprits for finishing off the evidence.

tahnk you for your responses. but i found my fish and seems like i had a dodgy supplier as all the fish i got from him died within two weeks

Have you checked water conditions? New fish may have a harder time adjusting to less than perfect water conditions. The fish that have been in the tank already may be more adjust to it, not that they should be allowed to be in poor water conditions.
