Hi,

I'm not sure if I have a problem or not so I'm hoping someone can give advice. I have 6 guppies in my tank at the moment water ph 8.0 ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 10ppm. I haven't had them long so I'm not even sure what normal behavior is and if I'm just imagining this. I've noticed the guppies are constantly opening and closing there mouth and they never stop moving, constantly swimming about really fast and going into the output flow from the filter (I'm sure I read they prefer calm water).

Also I've noticed in a certain light they have a white/silver reflective patch right behind there eyes where the gills are, you can only see it at certain angles in the light and I'm not sure if this is new or has always been the case.

Can someone tell me if I'm just imagining problems....

Thanks

How many gallons or litres is the tank?
What's the make of the test kit you are using?

Are the fish showing any of these symtoms.
Erratic swimming, darting, flicking and rubbing, laboured breathing or gasping, greyish white film on fish, or spots, excess slime or mucas.
Swimming in a jerky movement.
Do the gills look pale with excess mucas, or red and inflamed.
Any whiteness to the fish mouth, or fluffy cotton wool on there mouth.
Any red sores on there mouths.
Any red pin prick marks or red sores on there body.
Shine a torch on the fish with tank lights out for golden yellow spots, gold dusting, rusty coloured varnish on fish body or gills.

It's a 90L tank and the test kit is the API liquid one....

I would say maybe these...

Erratic swimming, darting, occasionally I'll see one of them kind of rubbing on the sand but that's quite rare

greyish white film on fish - maybe greyish, not sure I'll have a better look when I get home tonight

Do the gills look pale with excess mucas, or red and inflamed. - on one of the fish they look quite red but the others look fine

Shine a torch on the fish with tank lights out for golden yellow spots, gold dusting, rusty coloured varnish on fish body or gills. - you can definately see something showing up when you do this but I wouldn't say yellow or gold.

Think I might take a trip back to the LFS and see if they look any different in the shop.

You could be dealing with a parasite.
How long have the fish been in the tank?
If there new fish how long did you climatise the new fish for?

Do the fish swim in a jerky movement.
Take a closer look at the fish to see if you can see any tiny red pierce marks on the fish body.
Also keep a look out for tiny white spots.
