I am being over-run by guppy and mollie fry 11 more were born about 3 hours ago. I have 2 options A. Feed them to my Bettas or B. Buy a tank just for fry

I'm going with B because I just don't have the heart to feed the fry to my Bettas. So tomorrow I am going out and I'm planning on buying a tank, filter, heater etc.

I just want advice from others on how to go about this as I have never set up a tank for fry and am not sure if they need anything special.

I'm looking at housing about 25 fry so would a 10 gallon be adequate? I'm thinking of buying a filter that is a lot stronger so it can handle all the amount of waste would that be a good idea?

Should I maybe keep some cories on the bottom of the tank as I know they are great little garbage collectors? :p Or should it only house fry?

I know now that I should of had a fry tank a long time ago but I never could of guessed at how often my mollies/guppies get pregnant and give birth and the amount they give birth to as well as the survival rate!!

Also because the tank will be new it won't be cycled..I will be adding filter media as well as a nylon bag of established gravel to the new tank though....so would I be safe in adding the fry immediately?

I realize this question has probably been asked before...but I looked through old posts and I couldn't see anything that fit everything I needed to ask.

Thanks :)

A stronger power filter is not a good idea. The fry can get sucked up in it. Even if you cover the intake with something they can still be pulled into this cover. A normal 10g power filter with some intake cover can be ok. I only use air powered sponge filters in my fry tanks. Some people will tell you no rocks or sand in it, I use sand in my fry tanks a little harder to clean than just a plain bottom but this is a better bio filter than just the glass.

Fry like it hot 80to83f. So a good heather is a must.

Cories are ok with fry they normaly leave them be.

If anyway you can add live plants to this tank that would help alot. Live plants make for healthy fry and cycle the tank faster.

Thanks for all your advice!!!

One more thing though will I be able to add the fry immediately to the tank if I use a lot of stuff from an already established tank?
