so every few days I look around gumtree (and ebay to an extent) and have to hide my wallet and car keys to stop myself buying up all the goldfish and others crammed into small tanks. now if I did pick up a few of these - mostly common and fancy goldfish, but also just spotted some serpaes as well (in with fancy goldfish in a 10 gallon - smart), would anyone want to give them permanent homes?

I don't have enough room in my house for 6 dozen goldfish tanks - barely have room for 2 8 gallons, but hey I can shuffle - but if I rejigged my own personal blog (which was hacked and I need to fix at the moment) with these sightings, bought up tank and fish - rehomed fish for free but sold the tank for cheap (most of them aren't that amazing anyway) - would anyone be interested in the central london/north london (i live in camden)/herts and essex areas be interested in helping out?

whether it be larger goldfish tanks, ponds (just saw 5 common goldfish in an 8 gallon for sale for instance), and tropical tanks also. now I would be able to drive fish/tanks to you (with a donation towards petrol money if it's over an hour away) and welcome pick up (i'm a 10 minute walk from a tube station on the northern line outside of congestion charge). is this just waaay too generous of me? i would only deliver fish to those with overly adequate and responsible homes - no OMG a free goldfish? i have a baby bioorb bring it to me! - no I'm only half a mug not a full mug!

wow, I rambled.

u cant rescue them all, how about emailing the seller and advising them of returning the fish to the shop, lots of people dont even realise this is an option :)

that's because it very often isn't an option - especially when the fish has been in the individual's possession for over a year or more. most stores round my way won't take in any fish - and especially not goldfish. they'll consider larger tropicals like Oscars occasionally - because there is some resale in those - but not the old humble goldfish. and it certainly wouldn't be an attempt to rescue them all, but one or two here and there would be doing my bit (and educating the person i'm buying from while i'm there!)

noone else? no point in even thinking about if there's noone else interested in the vague local area.
le sigh.

hi

i've just seen your post 12.11.08, i'm new to this site,

i've got a 230 litre tank currently homing 8 small fancy goldfish. the tank has been established since march this year.

i'm now looking at getting some more goldfish, so i would definately be interested in rehoming some. i brought my boys from a pet shop, but i have kicked myself recently thinking i should have looked in rescuing them instead.

so if you have some fancy goldfish that need a new loving home, please get in touch.

:)

With a 230L tank and 8 fancy goldfish I'd imagine it's pretty close to 'full stock' anyway, so if you are thinking of putting the 'rescued' goldfish in there I don't think that is going to work... sorry :(

wow i thought 5 more would be fine and still giving them all plenty of room, as at the moment the tank looks pretty empty. but
rather an empty looking tank, than an over stocked one that's for sure.

i'm gutted i can't rescue any fish though..........my boys wont be getting any new house mates then.

hey thanks for the advice, i really appreciate that

put it this way, a normal sized fancy golfish needs 100l. so 2 fish = 200l. so a smaller species will probably need about 40 litres each so i imagine you are fully stocked now anyway, its not to do with having space its to do with the chemical build up and the bio load.

looks like i need to invest in getting another tank, and separate my boys.

thanks for you advice.

when your fancies are fully grown you can only really have 3 or 4 in 1 tank of 200 litres.

its all to do with bio-load, gold fish are VERY messy fish.

I vaguely remember it's something to do with goldfish having no stomach, only an intestinal tract, I actually copy'n'pasted some information about it the other day, I'll attempt to find it -

mmm yeah they are mucky pups. i have a very good filtration system in their home, i've got a good external filters and i also do a gravel clean every month to get rid of any decomposing food. i don't do the gravel clean more frequently as i don't want to disturb them to much.

mmm actually rather than separate them might be best to start saving now, and get a 450 litre tank, for when they start growing. they are all currently about 2 inches.

thanks :)

you would be ok to do a gravel vac every week when you do a water-change.

I'd be tempted to be doing a gravel clean weekly when you change their water, they won't mind it honest!
