I think that all of us are very familiar with the attitudes that many--most--petshops have: they're only interested in selling stuff, who cares about the animals.

Well, in a tiny little hardware store in a flea-speck town where you would least expect to find a fish store--let alone a good one--there was a fish section. Investigating, I found that the tanks had an unusual amount of space for a pet shop. And there were no really bad mixes of fish, either. Looking closer, I saw that on many of the aquariums there were little notes taped on about the special care requirements of many of the fish. For instance, on the molly/goby tank, it said that they liked a lot of salt and that mollies could be rather delicate and not for beginners. In fact, there was even one on the goldfish tank stating that goldfish can get 15 inches and that they need a lot of space!!! I had certainly never seen THAT before!!! :D

And then I saw the Jellybean Blood Parrot Cichlids.

And guess what color they were?

White. :D :D :D

Yep, undyed Blood Parrot Cichlids. I was impressed, especially seeing as it was in a hardware store; you'd think they'd be like the infamous grocery store pet sections that don't give a rip. But here, in this flea-speck little town, was a fish retailer who actually cares. :D :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :D

How lovely. I was in Pets@home last weekend and there was a really bad case of fungus going on. Of course all their tanks share a water supply/filter so it was probably the end for all the fish. I did tell the manager but he didn't really seem interested. I even offered to take the fish home and try to save them. Their tanks are so bad I will never buy a fish from them.

Maidenhed Aquatics are great though.
They will refuse to sell anyone fish that haven't been quarantined or are not eating etc.

that's lovely

but are you actually gonna tell people where it is so they can visit it, or is it your secret?

that would be like my shop if i made one.. id most certainly put noted like that on them...
i tend to inform ppl in wildwoods when i help in the fish house... the other kids in there sell wateva but i actually question them and ask them what they have and if it would be suited....

That's not as bad as you think. :p A lot of people want to put bala sharks and plecos into 10-15 gallon tanks, or oscars into 20 gallon tanks.

It's in Nashville, Michigan...I don't remember exactly where--in fact, I don't even remember what its name is--but I'll try to find out for you (I have such bad memory it isn't even funny! you should see how I am with names! :*) )!!!

There are smaller plecos that one can have in a 10 or 15, so not that big of a deal.

Good find N2bK! I hope you let them know how much you like them by supporting their store!

Yeah but I meant common plecs. ;) Although IMO no plec should be kept in less than 20 gallons due to massive waste production, thus need for efficient filtration which usually cannot be achieved in a tank that small.
