Okay so here's the story...

I walked in walmart, and planned to only go to electronics, but couldn't resist going to the fish dept to "look". Well when I got there, I saw this woman standing at the goldfish tanks. She was asking some other lady who was back there getting a 25 lbs. bag of gravel how to tell when the fish has ich. Well I over heard and so I stepped over to see what was up. I showed her AND the employees the sick ones (pretty much 1/2 of the whole stock). Then she pointed to a healthy one in a sick fish's tank and asked if that one was great and I said, "IMO, you need to stay away from any tank that has a sickly fish in it b/c 99% of the time, the healthy ones will get it too." So she said, "well, i have to get some to replace my others." SO I asked her whay size she had and she said a 10g! I asked her how many she had and she had 8!!!! in a 10g!!!!! SO I quickly corrected her and told her, "No ma'am, you can't do that. Goldfish need 10gs each AT LEAST." Then she told me a slaughtered version of our 1"/g rule. I think she said 1 fish per gallon.

ANy way, I corrected that with the employee standing there, and convinced her to get some much smaller tropicals. Then she started up with the, "I dont got no heater set up", but she had one! I told her that she needed to put the heater up to 75 F and only get 2-3 fish at a time. I finally got her to get some serpae tetras, and convinced her to set up her heater. Really, how much trouble is putting that on? I also let her know she needed to stay away from aggressive fish, and I listed a few they had there that were aggressive, so she knows what ones to stay away from (Still, the employee's there) I also told her about shoalings, and she need atleast 5 per each one. SO I told her the best thing for her to do is buy 2-3 per time, of the serpaes until she had 7 or eight of them and that would be all she'd get in that 10g.

And of course I told her wait a month before getting anymore and do several water changes per week for a while. Then after the new ones wait 2 weeks, etc. Then she thanked me and told the employees they needed to take a class and that i was a God send and all that Jazz.

So any way, that employee knew absolutely nothin' 'bout goldfish b/c she said he sold her the goldfish the day she bought the tank, and didn't tell her they WERE going to die. Glad to know I saved 8 or maybe even 16 golds today!

I surely hope I didn't tell her anything wrong b/c if I see her again I want to correct her, and myself... ANy comments?

Sorry to ramble, I was VERY talkative at the walmart tonight with other people as well...

You did a good deed and should feel proud of yourself as an upstanding citizen of Wal-Mart, USA. Although, imho you could have told the lady about fish TB being transferable to humans or something to get her out of the hobby since she's probably too irresponsible to care for fish anyway.

Really? I had no idea that could happen (tb = tuberculosis right?)

I recently visited a Walmart that I don't usually go to. I peeked at the fish and noticed that many of them were sick. They had tons of finrot and several with popeye. When the kid that worked there came by and asked if I needed anything, I told him that he had a bunch of sick fish. He told me he knew he did, but since no one ever told him what they were sick with, he didn't know what to treat them for and that all he could do was scoop out the dead ones. So I poked through the tanks and told him what fish had what illness and told him how I knew. He actually took out a note pad and took notes! I was impressed with that. Then he pulled out all the medicines they kept and treated the tanks while I was there. Although this doesn't make up for the terrible condition of the tanks and all the sick fish, at least he was willing to listen and was attempting to try and fix it.

Fish TB is different from human TB though... getting fish TB isn't a big deal, and it's rare for humans to get it anyway. You can get it through a cut on your hand coming into contact with tank water an infected fish lives in.

You did a great job mlee0332! You should be proud of yourself!

That's better than my wm. They KNOW what the diseases are and refuse to treat b/c they receive "credit" for each dead one... What a bunch of jerks...

@synirr, Thankyou, i was just hoping i wasn;t misinforming her... I guess not...

@ angry: the people in my localest LFS's dont care... I went in today and they were talking and I over heard. One guy was saying, "You know that tank under the cabinet of this tank. I haven;t fed him in like forever and I found him dead!" I was horrified. I left...

And the employee sold a little girl (she was like 10) a bunch of feeders with ich! SHe bought ten and 1 had ich. 3 more of the ten were in that tank with the sickly one...

Thank you, thank you *takes bow* . For my next trick...

I dont see where you guys get the guts to just walk up and start rambling....weird....hmhm.......

I dont know where it came from either... Cuz that lady really got defensive when i told her she was wrong (as would every normal person)...

I didn't think I could do it either.... It just sorta came out... Believe you me, I was SHAKING the whole time after that woman tried to correct me about the 1 fish/gallon - 1''/gallon thing. I quickly changed the subject about that real quick.

Hey real quick question. Since Black Moores dont get but 6'', do they still need 10gallons? (I think thats what I read, maybe they might even get smaller)
