Originally My plan was to get to f8s,However i am thinking and i cannot resit getting one or two of these puffs, i have a 40 gal

overfiltered
CYCLED
0ppm ammonia
0ppm nitrites
40ppm Nitrates(lowering It)
sandy bottom
brackish
Empty cycled tank

I know 40gal is to small, but i was thinking alot and i would eventually want a saltwater, so i plan to get a 55 gal in a few months, and my idea was get like 2 1 inch gsps, house them in the 40gal for maybe a month or 2(if that long, probably sooner), and then put them in a marine 55gal, i have almost everthing i need, luckilly i bought a 55gal filter for my 40gal and i also bought a 55gal heater, have many snails(breeding) doing there stuff, plenty of food(frozen brine shrimp, clams, krill, shrimp from the market, i wanna make a very good enviroment for my puffs

Can I do this?

If i get a GSP is it gonna want another GSP as a friend?, i do this with like all of my fish enless its completly not good

thanks for the help any suggestions?

If you plan to move them, just wait till you have a big enough tank then get the fish. Personally Fig8's are a far more interactive and sociable fish than GSP's. Id rather have 3 or 4 Fig8's than GSP's but its your choice.

I agree with Dark Entity to some extent: half of the fun of puffers is watching them interact with each other. GSPs are somewhat territorial, and in anything less than a 55 gallon tank it's usually recommended that people keep just the one. You might be fine with 2 females in a 40 gallon tank... but sexing them is impossible, so you could only really get two females by keeping a bunch and removing the bullies as they matured.

Anyway, one other nice thing about figure-8s is they get prettier with age. Many other puffers do the reverse, including GSPs, which become much more drab muddy green/olive as they mature. In a 40 gallon tank you could probably keep four or five figure-8s without any problems, and they'd be constantly buzzing about entertaining you.

Cheers, Neale
