Hi

Since last weekend I have noticed that my GSP sits at the bottom of the tank hides in a cave and curls his tail round his body when it's feeding time. He is normally a dare devil but he doesn't like the sudden moves the shark cats perform as he got shoved out the way a few times before. Never seen him like this before.

Any thoughts ?

How large is the Puffer and Shark?
Water stats?

Does the puffer only hide when the shark is out-and-about during feeding time or is he hiding all the time? My guess is that the size and strength of the shark startles the puffer so he retreats, but I cant be 100% postitive without more information.

Hi AMS

Puffer is nearly 3 inches the cat shark is about 8 inch. My water is ok the only thing I can think of is maybe that the salinity is not high enough it's about 1.007. I am waiting for my new tank so I can separate the fish with higher and lower salinity. I am sure he is doing it only when feeding time comes around but I am going to watch him more closely at the weekend.

Thanks again

With that size difference my best bet is that the puffer gets startled by the shark that is over 2x bigger than himself, so he retreats to his cave. When the puffer grows to 6 inches he probably wont be as intimidated, but moving them to a different tank sounds like a good idea.

Is the puffer getting any food?

Hi AMS

The Puffer don't look interested in food have not seen him eat. Only when the lights are out he comes back out again. Going to change the tank around this weekend as my chromides and gobies going into another tank. Will keep my eye on the puffer.

P.S Just to be on the safe side would you do a anti bacterial treatment ?

Thanks again. All suggestions are very much appreciated.

I wouldnt as the puffer is showing no signs of illness.

Hi Again

I have been watching him this evening and he is swimming about and has his color so I think it is only at
feeding time.
Just one thing. I thought when puffers have an internal bacterial infection the only signs are not eating and sitting at the bottom of the tank ?

So long as he is only resting during feeding time I think there is no reason to believe he has a bacterial infection. If he was resting all the time I would be more concerned. Look out for cloudy eyes though, this could be a sign of bacterial infection, as well could red streaks along the body. (Red streaks are an external bacterial infection)

My guess is that he is just stressed by the shark. If his condition starts to deteriorate and symptons of bacterial infection starts to show I would quarantine immediately and use the appropriate medications.
